83 Honda Accord fuel pump turns on and off erratically and you can here it clicking, cold start rpms at 2500 to 3000, after it warms up it dies when I come to a stop. Carburated with fuel pump in tank. No visible vaccum leaks, changed both fuel filters.

  • Tinette Booth Oct 26, 2009

Thank you but the car is not fuel injected.

When I said fuel pump in the tank, that was a miss-type, I meant beside tank. Good ideas, I'll check them out.

On a 83 its a external fuel pump, mounted in front of the fuel filter right in front of the drivers side rear tire, sounds like a bad pump or a bad relay or also could be the oil pressure switch that tells the fuel pump to kick in

You may want to try replacing the fuel pump. if that does not fix the prob then it my lay in the fuel injector, the fuel injector and many factors that make it work right 1 Pressure(pump) the pressure regulator, and spray pattern, you more than likley can find what you eed in a junk yard. or it could even be your fuel pump relay

sorry about that i miss read the problem. after re-reading and doing some research the problem lies within two things. 1 being the fuel pump, (cant remember if they did this that year) but you should have acces in trunk to feul sending unit. 2 fuel pump relay.. if the car starts and runs awhile but it high rpm the fuel pump sounds like it is bad. i would pull the fuel sending unit out of the car and put in water. the hook a battery charger or battery to its and let it runs, if it working properly it should be pretty powerful. if it barely pushes then you need a new pump. if it is power and stays running then you have a bad relay. Again im sorry for the miss read quistion before. have a nice day!

Will start but when apply fuel it chokes out and dies

Two common issues on these old Accords that no one ever mentions. First, replace the main relay (It's located in a tight spot under the driver's side of the dash behind the silver cruise control module). It's notorious for causing fuel starvation problems because over time the soldering on the connections on the relay crack when it's hot, and will make contact when it's cold. You can find videos on Youtube on where it's located and how to replace it. Just search "1990 Honda Accord main relay". Second, you don't need a scanner to diagnose an OBD1 system. There is a self diagnostic plug located on the passenger side near the kick panel below the dash. Google "1990 Honda Accord Self Diagnostic CEL Lights" to find out how to do it and get CEL codes and descriptions.

83 honda accord it acts like it is out of gas but there is plenty. It turns over good but just wont start

Do you know if there is gas in the carb ?
1982 and 1983 Honda Accord models use an electric pump.
If there is no fuel in the carb you'll need to find out if the pump is working.
Also make sure it is getting spark to the plugs.

1988 5 speed Honda Accord

Ensure your spark plugs, wires (ignition coil and spark) and your filters (air and fuel) are within 2 years of installation It's erratic at 800 rpm as the engine is cold and they like the 2200 range for 3 minutes before they kick down on their own. Press the pedal twice before inserting your key. The owners manual states depending on the outside temperature, the engine will require more priming. Update if possible.

I have a 1996 2.5 liter Dodge dakota that will turn over but not

im assuming youve done basic tune up of plugs, wires, air and fuel filters, oil, distributor if applicable (im guessing not but never owned a dodge)

if it bogs down/stalls at stops only when its hot, try a new egr valve. probably getting stuck open. if not that try heavier oil to see if its losing compression, just one step up. also,

if it runs ok after clearing the computer by disconnecting the battery for a while, probably a dying sensor (most likely o2)

if after clearing computer it still runs bad after warm up, see if it bogs down really bad when letting it warm up from cold without driving (just idle to make sure its not egr system). if it dies or sounds like its close to dead, then its probably something fuel related (clogged/faulty injector, worn fuel pump, bad pump relay)

hope it helps

1983 honda acc cold start wont stay running when cold idles rough

try checkin your idle air control. most of the time it is a vacuumn line going into intake.pull it off and if the car revs up dont worry, it wont hurt it. if it does simply put it back on, if it dies you have a bad vacumn.

High rpms and then dies

check for loose vacuum lines or check to see if there cracks on them. you sound like you have a vacuum leak as well as your Idle Air Control Valve(IAC) going bad. good luck and happy holiday
