On a 83 its a external fuel pump, mounted in front of the fuel filter right in front of the drivers side rear tire, sounds like a bad pump or a bad relay or also could be the oil pressure switch that tells the fuel pump to kick in
You may want to try replacing the fuel pump. if that does not fix the prob then it my lay in the fuel injector, the fuel injector and many factors that make it work right 1 Pressure(pump) the pressure regulator, and spray pattern, you more than likley can find what you eed in a junk yard. or it could even be your fuel pump relay
sorry about that i miss read the problem. after re-reading and doing some research the problem lies within two things. 1 being the fuel pump, (cant remember if they did this that year) but you should have acces in trunk to feul sending unit. 2 fuel pump relay.. if the car starts and runs awhile but it high rpm the fuel pump sounds like it is bad. i would pull the fuel sending unit out of the car and put in water. the hook a battery charger or battery to its and let it runs, if it working properly it should be pretty powerful. if it barely pushes then you need a new pump. if it is power and stays running then you have a bad relay. Again im sorry for the miss read quistion before. have a nice day!

Thank you but the car is not fuel injected.
When I said fuel pump in the tank, that was a miss-type, I meant beside tank. Good ideas, I'll check them out.
