Slide under the cab and look up where the engine and transmission meet. You'll see it bolted there. Most Nissan pickups have it mounted on the passenger side.

Hi Check and make sure the bolts to the starter motor are tight. The starter might sound like its working but its probably has a burnt solanoid. the third thing it could be is the ring gear is worn. Hope its not the last one. Good luck !!
Change the starter. The starter has a gear that moves forward, meshes with the flywheel, and cranks the engine over. From what you describe, the gear is spinning, but not advancing on it's shaft to mesh with the flywheel.
The starter on the 5.6 L engine is located at the top of the transmission bellhousing. You have to remove the upper intake plenum to get to the starter. You can't really see the starter until the plenum is out of the way.
