2001 Chevrolet Diesel 3500 express van sta...

I'm having a fuel (?) problem with my van. I stall while driving or when idling or it doesn't start. Eventually it starts. Maybe I'm fooling myself but it seems to start after I empty the fuel filter and bleed it. Then it goes for a few days and dies again.
I dropped the fuel tank and there were flecks in it. I emptied the tank. I also cleaned (maybe not good enough) the fuel pump and put it back up, hoping I'd get through the winter and replace the tank in the spring.

The other day my fuel pump was making more noise than normal. Now it is quiet again.

Now I'm thinking the fuel injectors may be dirty. I don't even know where to look for them.

Where can I find a diagram of the fuel system of this?

Should I try to do it myself? I service oil burners and repair clocks so I'm not mechanically challenged.

Is there a way I can diagnose this. No "service engine soon" light that comes on and no codes.

Thanks
Marilyn

- From the tank I have a fuel filter which I've changed 3 times in the past 3 months. I also changed the inline filter which has an electiical sensor (water indicator I think).

Silly question ??? Is the fuel pump the same as the injector pump?

Do you know if i can go to the chevy dealer and get a diagram of the fuel system so I know where things are?

Thanks again,
Marilyn

- I think I found the problem for this van.

The PMD, which is attached to the injection pump, gets too hot and shuts the van off. When it cools off the van starts up again.
My mechanic disconnected the PMD and reattached a new one on a remote board which is away from the pump. So far I haven't stalled and it's been a week now.

Sound like you are sucking air in through a leak in the suction line [the one from the tank to the ingection pump].A leak in the return line will actually leak fuel but nit the suction line. You should check to see if it has a prefilter, not all do but if you do have odds are it's never been changed.

- The injection pump is supplied by the fuel pump and only gets low pressure fuel to the injectiom system, the injection pump jacks tht pressure way up to as high as 1500 psi .The injection pump can be found by following the lines back from the injecters and they will lead you to the pump.
