Sounds like no transmission fluid. Check the fluid level for your transmission, there should be a seperate dipstick

Sounds like maybe a halfshaft (axle) problem. Maybe has a bad cv joint. If that's not it then possibly the spur gear in the ****** broke.

Check the fan and see if it runs when it's in idle

sounds like vapor lock or a fouled fuel filter

To get an accurate voltage reading on the alternator, measure across the battery while the engine is running at 3000RPM. It should read between 13.5 and 14.5. If it's low then shut the car off and look on the back of the alternator for a large red wire ( it should be on a terminal marked B+) and make sure the terminal is clean and shiny with no trace of green gunk (corrosion). Clean up the small blue wire too. Do the same with both battery cables. Check the tension on the drive belt. It should only move about 1/2 inch when you push down on it. Retest for voltage. If it's still low then you have probably damaged the alternator when you unhooked the battery. NEVER unhook the battery cables on a VW when it's running. Hope this helps.

Have you changed the fuel filter? Does it start and die right away, or does it take a few minutes?

do you have enough fuel pressure and you might want to also check cataletic converters
