Iam replacing both drive axels on my 86 subaru gl, the old axels had a flange on the end that goes to the transmission but the new ones dont. do i need those? if yes where can i find out what there called?

You may have gotten the wrong parts to replace your axles. Take them back to the store and have them check. If you already have your old axles out, you could take them with you to compare to the new axles to make sure they are the same.
