hello. I can assist you. Before I get too far let me say that your problem is fixable but the fix is a bit technical so if you are not into autoelectric science please go to the yellow pages and look up under auto electric repair shops for a few local shops. call them, tell them what is going on and try to get a sense of which of them might best assist you for a fair price.

That said, here is your problem and the fix to it:

You have a ground loop issue. Google ground loops, audio ground loops, etc, I'm not going to go into detail on all of the 'whys' of what I'm about to tell you, but there are plenty of resources on . It could be happening because you have shielding in your patch cables connecting to both your stereo and amplifier, which can create a ground loop for stray currents to flow and get picked up from inductive effects off your alternator.

OR it could be happening if the ground of your stereo and the ground of your amplifier are at different electrical potentials. In other words, let's say your battery terminal is ultimately the common point for your negative connections. Your grounds will be at slightly different potentials if the resistance between your common point and the negative connection at your amplifier is different than the resistance of the common point and the negative connection of your stereo. This happened on my boat, where the amplifier was fed a nice fat 4 gauge wire, while the stereo run was probably 18 gauge or smaller. The increased resistance of the 18 gauge wire of a long run cause enough of a difference in resistance to affect the signals' ability to be communicated from the stereo to the amplifier. I'm not sure why but this difference in ground potentials made my signals very receptive to engine/alternator whine. MY FIX: was to run a short 18 gauge wire from the amplifier ground connection (on top of the input ground from the battery negative) to the stereo negative. Since this run was A) very short and B) coming from the negative of the amplifier, the ground of both stereo and amp were very very close in potential and I have had no trace of engine whine since.
