Cheapest synthetic is better than the most expensive standard oil. Walmart offer full synthetic, 5-quart containers of 5W and 10W-30 oil for about 17 bucks.
Either of those weights will serve you well - for 6,000 miles or so.
If you want to run for 10,000 miles, then a Mobile 1 full synthetic for a bit over double the price will serve well.
Suggest that you NEVER allow someone to sell you oil by the quart. The mark up is silly.
Suggest that 4 quart containers are NOT for cars... No car takes 4 quarts.
Suggest that 5 quart containers are good for buying and discarding oil - also cheaper. Check your local Walmart... then check ANY other retailer. Let us know if you can beat the price and container size advantage offered by Walmart.

Brand? I always go with either Mobile One or Castrol Syntech. If the vehicle is a diesel then Rotella or Delo. Delvac and Mystic is also good for diesels.

I have a 1990 dodge dakota 6 cyl. 3.9 liter that the oil light comes on when I am going down from second to first, and it wants to stall. I'm planning to change the oil pump. Is this the best course of action?
