Fuel pump relay contacts stuck? Aftermarket accessories tied into fuel pump relay circuits causing the relay to stay energized with the key off?
Testimonial: "Exactly what I was thinking, but thanks for the tip on aftermarket parts. I bought the truck used & the are added parts. Thanks so much for your help."
It is very comon on ford vehicles for the fuel pump relay to get stuck and keep pump engaged even with the key off. I would say start with the relay.
On an older vehicle it is also quite possible for your ignition switch to be stuck open a little (inside) if it has been used a lot or may have gotten moist inside, etc.
If you see any clue your ignition switch is not fully free to move or sticks when using (even a little), you might want to replace that with another one (even if just as a test with another used one) if a simple lock lube does not help. While often a switch or contacts will fail open in some cases they can stick "on" too.
Sorry if that did not seem highly helpful. If your ignition switch is stuck toward the on position at all (inside - may not be visible) that can cause your battery to run down also along with the fuel pumps and problems. It has to fully release open or things will stay on.
While this may not be what your truck is doing, it is definitely something to make sure of. One test is: do any other lights or warning indicators stay on on your dash? IF they do (you may not have this problem) then you probably do have a shorted or malfunctioning ign switch. If it is ONLY your fuel pumps that stay on then the relay is probably more likely the problem, shorted. We just want to remember a short may exist in most any electrical part.
