I have a 2006 Scion Xa that tried to kill me today. SERIOUSLY. I had cruise control on and was doing 70. Turned cruise control off as I entered a mid size town and WTF the car wouldn't idle below 60mph. I tried turning the cruise control on/off multiple times and tapped the brakes. It was like cruise control was on and stuck at 60mpg. I slowed it down using the brakes with the RPMs screaming higher and higher like the engine was going to blow. STANDING on the brakes and the car was still trying to inch through the intersection at the off ramp. Finally lurched to a stop and turned the car off. Tried turning it back on and immediately the engine RPMs screamed up like it wanted to shoot off at 60mph. I stared horrified at the building in front of me with its plate glass windows. Sigh. Called Toyota and the toyota tech said to tap the gas pedal a couple of times - that maybe the throttle was stuck. I went to the car and SLAMMED on the gas pedal a few times. Started it back up and WHEW my sweetie was back. The possession was over. Yes, I've already seen the service bulletins on the cruise control (but I thought sweetie had that checked during two oil changes ago)... Has anyone experience a similar SCARY incident? Could it be a stuck throttle cable? Or could the cruise control truely take TOTAL CONTROL of the throttle. See, I toggled the cruise control on/off numerous times and so it should have released according to the service bulletin. Anyway, little miss bit is having her parts checked out.

- Technicians took no time at all finding the problem. A nut had fallen off of the shaft where the cruise control throttle was attached. I guess I was lucky.
Next time that happens, like the tech said tap the gas peddle, but if your coming to traffic or a town or a stop, slow down as much as you can, throw it in neutral (as if you put it into park while still moving with speed, that could screw your transmission. Anyway, put it into neutral, turn it off, tap the gas peddle like the tech said, and then restart the car. (To be on the safe side, rather then having the car rev growing.
Yes like you said their is a TSB for this and my buddie has experienced the same problem, coincidentally while I was driving with him. What happens is when you tap the break or cruise control, the mechanism that controls the throttle cable fails to let go, so thus when you tap the peddle it kinda nudges it back.
You could say the mechanism that takes control of the throttle, sticks yes.
You do know that the manufacturer will replace this for you free - no charge? So you will have no more problems anymore. Owners can contact Rostra at 910-291-2538.
