There are many other causes to investigate. Intermittent shut down can be caused by a bad ignition switch or other intermittent bad connection in ignition system, fuel pump beginning to fail, coil beginning to fail or a bad relay. This is the kind of problem that shops hate because during testing, unless something has left a stored code, everything will test fine When the engine shuts down, you need to determine what's missing ...fuel or spark. Then you can begin to track down the problem. You will need a decent digital multi-meter and a manual such as chilton or haynes as a guide for those tests. No competent tech will replace parts by guessing...you should not either.

Trouble shooting for 1997 RS chevy camaro

Hi Pam,
Sound like the mass air flow sensor.
While your car is running ,lift the hood .Follow the hose from the throttle body to the air filter box. There will be a sensor mounted as part of the hose. Tap on the top of the sensor with a screwdriver handle a couple of time, if faulty it will stall the engine out.

Car starts but revs for a few seconds with lots of black smoke and then cuts out have disconected exhaust from manifold but no change

Is this a diesel TDI PD ?? If so i had the same problem with one of these TDI engines and traced it to the crank sensor signal implausable. The revs would start increasing with no pressure on the throttle, lots of black smoke and then cut out. The crank sensor wiring was at fault in this case. The ECU didnt know where the crank position was in relation to the camshaft and was guessing when to inject the fuel. Hence the black smoke ! Hope this is of some use.

The engine cuts out when driving along of my ford

This is something you can save money on by trying to fix it yourself. You can get a free scan at Autozone or Oreillys. If this does not show anything you need to use the "wiggle" test.

A mechanic would check the battery cables, then grab wires and wiggle them while the engine is running to see if it affects the car. There is a connector on the TPS, a throttle sensor which is behind the Air Filter ductwork. It is attached to the horn shaped metal part. There are plug-ins for cam and crank sensors. Look for green corroded terminals with the engine off and the sensors unplugged.
If no luck under the hood, you may be able to reach wires going to the fuelpump and fuel gauge. It should not take much to simulate road vibration.

What you would need to do after this is take it to a shop where they will hook testing equipment onto your car and drive it hoping to get it to defect at that time. Intermittent faults can take several attempts to find. Good Luck.
