Could be 2 things.

1. When you turn the key from off to run ( not start ), do you hear the fuel pump run ?

2. Did you push down on the fuel inertia switch in the passenger side kick panel ? It should have happened with a jar, but just to check.

The 1998 does not have PATS, so that is not an issue. Do you have the factory immobilizer ?
