Using a compression tester in the cylinder all the way to the pass side, turn the engine over by hand until you see pressure rise. This gives you the start of the compression stroke. Remove the compression tester. (If you don't have one, put a finger the the spark plug hole and wait until you feel pressure. (Do not use the battery to turn it over, only do it by hand.) Once you are starting the compression stroke, put a thin but long screw driver or anything straight but easy to put in the spark plug hole.int that first cylinder.

Again, turning over by hand, turn it until the screw driver is at its highest point. You are at TDC.

Hope this helps

SOURCE: timing in my car off

looking at the front of the engine the no.1 cylinder is the first one closest to the front of engine, if it is in a V type layout, then it is the closest on the right side. You should be able to find tdc by looking at the marks on the harmonic balancer. You also have to be sure that it is on the compression stroke and not the exhaust stroke.

SOURCE: How do I find TDC through the #1 cyl spark plug

Probably the safest way I can think of is to use a plastic drinking straw. Place it in the spark plug hole (best done when you can see the piston) and rotate the crankshaft slowly by hand. When the straw stops rising you are at TDC. It is better done with a dial indicator but most people don't have one. There are at least three other ways to do this but this is the easiest and safest.

How to set crankpully on 1989 Ford escort 1.9 liter engine for timing set up

most crankshaft pulleys ( harmonic balancer ) are keyed onto the shaft and held there with a bolt
in that case the timing mark will always be in the right place
otherwise set the no 1 piston on tdc (remove no 1 spark plug and with a bit of light gauge wire move the crank until the piston comes up and then starts to go back down)
the mark on the balancer should be at the tdc mark on the timing case cover

Cant find tdc markings on escort 1997 1.8

Click on the following free, direct LinkS. It has all the Timing Belt Diagrams you will need, complete with Instructional and Directional Diagrams to set your Timing.
To my knowledge the 1997 Ford Escort only had a 2.0L not a 1.8L.
The 1996 had available the 1.8L and 1.9L. I could be mistaken - my apology.
In any case:
The 1st Link is for the 1996 Ford Escort 1.8L
The 2nd Link is for the 1997 Ford Escort 2.0L
Compare/use.

Looking for the access plug for the TDC pin on a 1999 escort zx2, for timing belt installation

Follow the links below for my timing how-to. The pins for finding TDC seem to be made to different lenghs. You may or may not have a correct length pin. I suggest you use the method in my how-to for finding TDC. FYI, the timing pin hole is located in the side of the block (facing the front of the car) behind the catalytic convertor.

Performance

All you would need to do is replace the camshaft sprocket with an aftermarket adjustable one. There are marks on the sprocket that tells you + or - and TDC. This allows you to raise or lower the camshaft timing depending on what you're wanting to do.
