Hi Guys,
Audi A4 Auto, N Reg, 4 speed, 80k, changed fluid 18months ago, also checked level. Driving normally (hot) there is no problem, push it slightly harder, ie, accel from standing (only) at a roundabout, problem comes when changing from 1st to 2nd. Engine revs higher than normal for this speed and seems slow to engage/reluctant to change up to 2nd with a thump. When cold it pulled away this morning like the 1st clutch was slipping and very reluctant to change. Would this be a sticky valve ?

The automatic cars (at least the tiptronics, which came out in 98) require the transmission to be up to a specific temperature, which must be monitored while changing the fluid - this requires VagCom, the VW/Audi diagnostic software (I'm not making this up). I am not sure whether the non-tiptronic cars had to have this as well or if it can be done as any other transmission - best bet is to call a European specialty mechanic and ask them - a dealer will kill you with labor rates. Do not just drain and refill though, without finding out first whether the VagCom procedure must be used.

Change the transmission fluid ant if that doesn't work then the transmission needs rebuilt or replaced. If you get on craigslist someone might be selling a transmission for cheap or check the salvage yards.
