Clarification Request

Air conditioning or no? Power Steering? (Usually yes for the '77) My '76 has a three groove pulley down on the harmonic balancer. It came with factory air.

Your Corvette is a C3. Corvette's from 1968 to 1982 are the C3 Corvettes.

Finding THE proper brackets will be tough, but not impossible. Chevrolet made many types, and styles of brackets. Many interchange.

Instead of asking for 1977 Corvette brackets at your local salvage yard, ask for 1977 Impala brackets. Much cheaper, and the same ones! To make sure what I have stated is correct, ask the person at the salvage yard to use his/hers - Interchange Manual, and see what all years, and models of Chevrolet those brackets will fit.

Be aware of course, that your country may want ALL emissions devices to be on the Corvette, as when it came from the factory.
In the US, some States are very stringent about this, while others are somewhat lax. Check what you need before you start.

Do you wish to restore your '77 back to near factory specs?
I indicate 'Near', because no offense, but it isn't worth restoring back to a Concours specification. The value when finished, won't be worth trying to find matching number parts.

Directions stated herein are from sitting in the Drivers seat. The Drivers side is the Left side. The Passenger side is the Right side.

The Alternator is bolted to a 2-piece bracket on the upper Left side. One bracket piece bolts to the cylinder head. Three bolts go through the bracket. The bracket is triangular shaped. The bottom bolt for the Alternator, (Long one), goes through the bracket, and bolts into the cylinder head. The Alternator moves side to side, and pivots on this bolt.
(The bolt is loosened to adjust tension on the Alternator belt. Then tightened after the belt has the proper tension on it)

The other bracket piece, has one corner that bolts to the Intake Manifold, and one corner that slightly wraps around the cylinder head, and bolts to the head.

This bracket piece has a long slot in it, that allows adjustment of the Alternator, to tighten the Alternator belt. The Alternator is allowed to move side to side, and has a bolt in it that tightens against the bracket.

Below the Alternator is the Power Steering Pump. The bracket for it is a 2-piece affair. One piece wraps around the Power Steering Pump, and is bolted to the pump. The other bracket piece bolts to the engine. The bracket for the Power Steering Pump, swivels on the bracket bolted to the engine, in a bottom bolt. The engine bracket has a slot in it to adjust the tension of the Power Steering Belt.

There are Many, Many websites on the internet for C3 Corvettes. I suggest you glean all the knowledge you can from them.
here is one that I would like to share, that I found some time ago.

http://www.corvettec3.ca/index.htm

On the homepage here, you will see various areas covered. I would like you to click on Parts Manual. (Fourth one over on the top)

These are the GM parts manuals for the C3 Corvettes.

After you click you will see Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, on up to Part 6.
Start with Part 1.

This is a PDF file. Your computer has Adobe Reader on it, and Adobe Reader uses PDF files. The average size of Each of these files is around 25MB's. A Large file!

If you do not have Adobe Reader version 8 or above, I suggest you go to Adobe.com, and download the new version. (Adobe Reader 9)
I use a medium speed DSL connection. If you are operating off of a dial-up connection, you can pretty much forget about downloading these files.

Page 1 of Manual 1, states the Manuals are copyrighted. Owner indicates that as long as the files aren't sold, and the files are intact with the owners name, and information attached, it's okay to download them. This is a free solution I am giving, so I am following stated owners instructions.

Page 1-C-13 in the Alphabetical Index, states the various brackets used.
BRACKET, Generator Mounting is for the Alternator. To the right of this you will see 2.777

Page 1-L-4 in Manual 1 shows you the pulleys, and belt routing, for the various engine setups used in the 1978 to 79 Corvettes. My 1976 is using the L48 setup. (Although my engine will outperform the 2009 Corvettes, hands down!) If your '77 will not have Air Conditioning, and no Air Pump, it will be the same.

Page 1-L-24 shows Alternator mounting, (Generator) for Corvettes 1973 through 1981. The bracket on top shown is different than used on a 75 through 77 Corvette.

Keep looking through the GM Parts Manuals. You'll find the info you need. Peruse the salvage yards. See if their are wrecked Corvettes you can take photos of inside the engine compartment, if the engine is still installed, and has brackets.

Talk to any Corvette owner you see, that has a Corvette near your year.
We 'Vette owners likes to talk about our cars! They may have knowledge of where to get parts, and helpful information. Lots of Corvette forums on the internet. You may want to join a few Corvette clubs. (They're free)

- I apologize for the misspelling of certain words. I usually try to be more professional than that.

Also need to make a few corrections.

For 1977 the Alternator mounts on the Right upper side. (Passenger side)
There is a small triangular bracket of thick metal, that bolts to the Water Pump. The pointed end of the triangular bracket points slightly up, and towards the Passenger side. A long bolt with a flat washer on it, goes through the triangular bracket, and bolts into a threaded hole in the cylinder head.

There is a long spacer that goes in-between the molded bracket of the Alternator, (Two Ears), and has a small machine bolt that bolts the spacer to the Alternator. Keeps the spacer in place, as you put the long bolt through the Alternator's molded bracket, (Ear).

The bracket for the top of the Alternator, is a somewhat triangular shaped piece also. The left side of the bracket bolts to the water pump, (Lower part of bracket), and to the Intake Manifold, (Upper part of bracket)

The Right side of the bracket has a long slot in it. The 'Ear' on the top of the Alternator has a threaded hole. A short bolt with a flat washer, goes through the slot of the bracket, and into the threaded hole of the Alternator.

The bottom bolt is loosened, as well as the top bolt in the slot. Then the Alternator is swung to the outside, (Right), to put tension on the Alternator belt. Top bolt in slot is tightened, then the bottom pivot bolt. (Long bolt)

If your '77 Corvette had an Air Pump originally, it bolted below the Alternator.
If your '77 Corvette had/has Air Conditioning, the air conditioning compressor bolts to the Upper Left side. Power Steering Pump is below.
