By sound of things it you lost your throttle then it seem like car is gone into limp mode. (which is safety mode to prevent damage to vehicle). Any warning light on dash board?
It sounds a lot like either the bulb went out or the fuse is blown. If there isn't anything else out it's likely the bulb, otherwise, check your fuse panel.
Audi A3 Instrument Panel Problems
This is a long post ... and sad to say ... no one found an answer other than replacing the dash ... ouch!
In another post someone did mention that it might be the alternator going bad ... maybe ... IF the problem always cropped up at higher rpm, while everything was fine if the car was just at idle. That did not sound like your situation.
Good luck on your troubleshooting
check the cluster dimmer switch make sure not turned all the way down to keep instrument cluster lights from glowing brightly.if dimmer switch not turned way down look for blowed instrument cluster fuse.
yeah the main ashtray light and stereo light fuses are normally located in the cab of the car under the dashboard you should also find that the interior light is not working as this is part of the same link. these fuse boxes can be in some obscure places such as the pillar which is only only visible while the door is open, or under the acctual dashboard.
