Nissan does not have a recommended replacement schedule for the 4 cylinder timing chain.

If your miles are high however, it would be advisable to inspect your sprockets for "hooking" of the teeth, and the chain for stretching. Any indication of either and you should replace both sprockets (gears) and the chain. If there is heavy noise/stretching of the chain, you may need to replace the guides as well, as they are often damaged by the loose chain.

Timing chains in most cases never need be repalced for the life of the engine, timing belts on the other hand last about 60,000-100,000 miles.

SOURCE: timing chain diagram

Just wrap the chain around the gears and lineup the dots. dot to dot and put them on. That's how it goes. The timing itself is not adjustable. It's controlled by the engines computer. It's that simple.

Most definetly yes. It should run you around 500 dollars. If you timing belt breaks it will destroy your valves and head.

SOURCE: timing chain

seek a cheap manuel-haynes or chiltons $20-25 to get step by step procedures. get them at auto zone or popular auto parts places. The preocedure has many steps. I am a seasoned mechanic and still get the cheap manuels to get proper timing chain position on the gears.

Does the timing chain need to be replaced?

You should replace the timing chain every 60-80,000, but if you are like me, I have 300,000 and never changed it. It is all about preventive maintenance. If I had a double overhead cam or something I would have changed it.I have seen timing chains go at 20,000. That's a choice that only you can make. Timing chains break without warning, so a new one is always nice , but personally, I think they just scare you into buying a chain every so many miles, so that you buy another one.Money grab. Good luck

1997 nissan pickup 4wd, just had timing chain replaced , now have noticeable knocking noise coming from valve cover ? mechanic says need new stack shims on valve rockers ?

Not likely. You have a 4 cyl engine with over head cam. It has hydrolic lifters. If it wasn't making the noise before he replaced the chain, then its something he did...or didn't do. If it was making the noise before, most common reason would be 1 or more lifters not pumping up. If you have a six cyl, no one changed the timing chain, (It doesn't have one!) The 3.0 6cyl has a belt.
