2003 jeep wrangler 4x4 auto...transmission is not engaging at all, i.e.not in park, drive, reverse, 2wd, 4hi or 4low...how do I fix it?

Did you check your ATF level? I have an ATF leak somewhere and when my ATF gets really low my auto trans will keep slipping out of gear until I dump another quart or two of ATF fluid into the trans.

TRANSMISSION LEAK

Pretty basic. If it's leaking that badly, you should have no problem locating the leak source. Line leaks are best done using compression fittings. (cut line and install). You can also use high pressure hose (like what's used when installing a trans cooler) slide it onto the line so there is at least three inches on each side of the line and use two mini-clamps with the screw parts opposite each other on each end.
If the leak is from the unit itself, each repair is different, some require trans removal. such as a front seal failure (fluid coming from the bellhousing.)
Hope it's just a line!
Once repaired, I recommend that you put in a container of lucas trans treatment to mitigate any ill effects of the run low condition as well.

4x4 whining noise

First, Check the transmission fluid level. Add more if it is low! If the noise continues, change your transmission fluid and assure that your transmission fluid level is correct. When changing transmission fluid you must drop the pan on the bottom of the transmission(You will know it immediately upon climing under transmission) it usually has10-15 small bolts holding it in. CHANGE THE TRANSMISSION FILTER WHEN CHANGING THE FLUID! If this doesn't quiet or fix the problem, then it sounds like your synchronizers or the bands in your transmission are worn(Thus the reason the whine goes away when it hits second gear) but check the cheaper of the two problems first. The synchronizers or bands are unfortunately a repair shop problem. I ran one of my vehicles for about 25,000 miles before having it serviced but I can't guarantee you the same amount of luck. Good Luck

4x4 won;t unlock

start the vehicle, shift transmission to nuetral. then move the 4x4 shifter to the 2wd position. then shift the transmission into reverse and back up a few feet straight, then drive forwards. it should be out of 4x4.
