I just want an estimated time it takes to change a fuel pump in the 2002 pontiac grand am se? (it's in the tank and when I take it in the shop, I want an idea, so as not to get ripped off on the time it takes) and would it be easy enough to do it home with a friend in school for mech or take it in to a shop with a qualified/experienced mechanic?

I just did a fuel pump on my friends 02 grand am in his warehouse because my uncle had a streetrod on his lift. The removal & installation of the fuel pump assembly & fuel filter took 2 hrs. It took me about an hour to get the car high enough (2') to work comfortable. 3 or 4 little bolts in the heat shield, 2 bolts holding straps,2 or 3 wire plugs & 3 fuel line clips. All these new (10yrs+-)modular modes of tranportation are designed to snap together & break apart. assembly plants out source most componets . The first way I check a fuel pump in the tank is to turn the power supply on and bang 4-5 times on bottom the tank without denting . 2 or 3 of the same steps may be needed turning power off between steps. Fuel pump usually starts working but won t last long.

Any repair shop can look up the time in the labor manuels for you. If you have a couple days and enough tools do it your self. The main issue is how did you test for a bad pump and is that your problem??

Im having fuel pump issues. could you please tell me where the fuel pump is located on a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am SE

The fuelpump is located inside the gas tank, you will need to drop the tank to replace the pump, heres a picture of the pump and in goes in through the top of the tank, the fuelpump is called a fuelpump module because it comes complete with holder sending unit and all other parts as you will see in the picture, hope this helps, good luck.johnjohn2_17.jpg

How do i change the fuel pump on 2001 pontiac grand am se 4 cyc

The fuel pump is inside the tank, you need to drop the tank (or one side) so you can access the large ring that secures the pump assembly (its usually on top of the tank, might have access through the trunk) Turn lock ring to remove assy and swap in new one. All pumps have relays now days so check that first under the hood or in the fusebox.

2002 pontiac grand am. do I remove fuel tank to

Yes, your fuel pump is connected to the sending unit in the gas tank. Be careful not to stretch of break the wires connected to the harness on top of the tank. These are usually in a very tight place, and can sometimes be reached easier by supporting the tank and removing the straps, slowly drop the tank to where you can remove the harness, as well as the fuel lines. This job is usually more aggrivating than difficult. If you have never attempted this before, expect to take some time doing this! Hope this helps
