My wife has a 2000 ford explorer and she is having a problem with her engine staying running. The explorer ran fine on the way to work but when I went to pick her explorer up I started the car and it ran and then died right away. I tried starting the car again and it started and I gave it gas and it stayed running as long as you gave it gas but as soon as you let go of the gas it will die. Is it the fuel pump that needs changed or the fuel filter? Or possibly just put some fuel injector into the gas tank? Your help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks.
Change the filter first. IF the pumpwas bad it wouldnt start at all. It could be going bad but the only way to really test it is to pull your gas tank and at that rate you may as well replace it.
you could have a clogged injector causing the lack of fuel as well. you can try injector cleaner, Lucas is my personal preference I use it at every fill-up. 4-6oz per tank of gas depending on your tank size.
Its possible, however not likely. your problem is either the fuel filter or fuel pump. the filter is cheaper and easier to replace than the pump. If the filter does not fix the problem then your fuel pump is on the way out. try to run your tank as low as possible because you have to remove it to get the fuel pump out.

First buy a repair manual for it at any AP store and read up in the trouble shooting part. Change the filter first and if that don't work then get ready with the big bucks for the fuel pump. Fuel injector fluid won't help you now.
Put a pressure gage on the input to the fuel injectors and it should hold 20+ lbs all day long. Yes , try the fuel filter if never changed. Injector cleaner shoud be every other fill up. Keeps injectors from rusting when dot driven

Somone told me it could be the idle air control valve and to try tapping on it as carbon could have possibly built up. Is this true? Thanks.

on an incline, engine will start momentarily, but dies immediately. Appears to start and run normally on level ground.
