check the fuel pressure to determine that the fuel pump is still good. there should be a schrader valve with a plastic cap on it on the fuel supply line that goes to the throttle body or if you have one fuel injector per cylinder, you will have a fuel rail that feeds each injector that will have the schrader valve that you screw the fuel pressure tester on. most fuel injection systems run 30 to 40 psi, but check a service manual or call a dealer to get the correct psi for your vehicle. if the fuel pressure is within specs, it sounds like the MAF (mass air flow) sensor is the culprit.

If the truck has not had the spark plugs and wires done I would do that along with the distributor cap and rotor but before doing that replace the fuel filter. the only other thing left to try is the Oxygen senson the ones that are located above or before the catalytic converter there are two on the exaust pipes coming down off the exhaust manifold. If you can get the truck to an auto zone see if there are any trouble codes that can be reader with there code reader this will point you in the right direction if they can retrieve the codes.
