When i try turning on my 2004 explorer it sometimes stalls and turns off a couple of times unless i press the gas when i turn it on. it also smells like gas like it is not burning it correctly. the other day it stalled on me when i was trying to back up to a parking space. i checked the code and it said "idle control system...rpm low", and person at the autoparts store said it was the idle control valve. is this correct?

That would be where I would start. That code means that the computer cannot get the idle up to where it wants it, which usually means the IAC is stuck. since its the only moving part in that system it is more prone to failure than the electrical components.

1994 FORD TAURUS

Do you smell gasoline fuel ?? When there's too much fuel, it saturates the spark plugs, preventing ignition. Let it sit for an hour to let spark plugs dry, then it starts OK later. Next time, turn starter without giving any throttle or very small throttle as engine turns. Myself, when my 2006 Dodge Plymouth minivan (sitting in storage) needs to start, I squirt (half second) starting fluid into air filter, close the air filter housing to trap flammable gas from starting fluid, then turn the engine without pressing on throttle. When the engine starts is when I give it a little throttle to bring up the RPM to 2,000 until it idles on its own without stalling from cold engine.

Have to press gas pedal to get engine to turn over

Pedal pressing has nothing to do with it. You problably have a bad starter or battery. Check your connections too.

2004 grand am se v6 sometimes wont start unless gas pedal is pushed

when you say -turn over do you mean firing-turning over to me means the starter motor is cranking or turning over-firing is when combustion happens in the cylinders-as far as the cranking continuing-try some wd40 in the ignition switch-it may be hanging up-Denny

STALLS WHEN STARTED UNLESS I PRESS GAS

the iac code has nothing to do with the maf . the maf is your mass air flow sensor and it is in the air tube going to the throttle body. the iac is your idle air control valve that is in the throttle body next to the throttle position sensor

Car wont turn on smells like gas

It should not smell like gas unless the engine is REALLY flooded. But todays computer controlled cars won't allow that. I think you have a fuel leak somewhere.

My nissan 350z sometimes stalls after starting

after i replaced the battery in my 2003 350z, it would stall immediatly after i cranked it on unless i gave it a little gas. I fixed this by cleaning the MAF and throtle body valve. Total supply costs were $15 and took about 20 minutes. My Z is not only fixed but runs smoother and cleaner.
