Noticed smoke coming out from the a/c vents and along side the front windshield, fogging up the window. The service engine light is on, but that has been on for sometime, then it went off last week, and is back on again. Auto Zone's machine read something with the EGR. I own a '99 Ford Expedition. Could it have anything to do with the heater core? I am a single parent raising my granddaughter. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hi,
First off, God bless you for stepping up for that baby!
OK about the vehicle... Generally when a heater core goes bad, the symptoms of a white smoke occur from the vents. Another symptom is a sweet smell from the antifreeze, possibly dampness on the passenger carpet, dryness in the back of your throat... ha.
Sorry... heater cores aint cheap... mostly labor entensive. You could continue to drive trhe vehicle until you are ready for repair or whatever you decide to do. You'll just have to put up with the symptoms till you do, and you won't have much luck defrosting.
The engine code shouldn't pick this up... that's a different animal.
Hope this helps... Good luck!

How can I check to see if the heater core is bad, please help

If the heater core is bad you will most likely have a coolant leak inside the car on the passenger floor area or you will get a sweet smell along with the windshield fogging up on defrost or whisps of smoke/steam from the vents

My 2001 jeep grand cherokee has a dark mist/smoke coming out of the vents, and defroster. But, the heater works fine. What could it be?

DO NOT USE STOP LEAK!!!!!! That stuff has no brain so you cant tell it to plug only specific leaks. It will go for the easiest hole to plug which can be a water port in the cooling jacket for the cyl heads. replace the heater core. Fix it right or bypass but please please please do not use anything that will stop a leak

THE DEFROST BLOWS OUT HOT AIR, BUT THE FRONT SIDE WINDOWS AND THE TOP OF THE WINDSHIELD FOGS OVER. HARDLY ANY AIR COMMING OUT OF THE VENTS ON THE SIDE OF THE DASH THAT BLOWS ON THE FRONT DRIVERS SIDE AND...

You didn't specify what type of vehicle.
If you have very poor air flow out the vents, later model vehicles have a hepa filter or cabin filter in line form the blower motor to the vents. It can be plugged quite easily and drastically cuts down the air blown into the vehicle. Check to see if they are plugged. Secondly, Check your coolant level in the rad and reservoir. If the windows fog up when cold and air flow is good it could indicate a leaking heater core. Check the passenger side floor for signs of coolant again I don't know the type of vehicle, some heater cores are located at the firewall under the hood.

My front defroster is not working at its best, however the back one is working properly. If I add any heat while trying to defrost my windows the problem get worst.

Sounds like the heater core is leaking coolant. If it is leaking it will blow steam out of defrost vents and fog the windshield. Symptoms: low coolant level in radiator, steam coming out vents when engine is warmed up, odor of anti-freeze coming out of vents, wet carpet in floorboard near heater blower motor.
If so, replace heater core.

Bad smell in side car. smells somewhat like a mold or dampness problem.

Hi,
Check the carpet on the passenger side and see if it is damp or wet. Also, have you noticed white smoke coming from your vents? Does your windshield etc. fog up rather than defrost? If so, you probably have a heater core that is leaking and needs replaced.
Hope this helps! Good luck.

Coolant vapors coming through vents

Sounds to me like a leaking heater core, probably just started. Quite an extensive operation to replace. If you happen to be in a cold climate, the windows will undoubtedly fog up. Hope this helps

Front window defroster note working

Was there a smell along with it fogging up the window like antifreeze? If it did the heater core is leaking and needs to be replaced. It will be kind of a sweet smell.
