I drained the cooling system, by remvoving the radiator plug, when I started to remove my starter motor, I then realised I couldn't manage it, so began putting everything back, when i started to top up the radiator I noticed it was at the fill level after only about 3 litres, The manual states 6 litres, is it likely that not all the water escaped or have i got some kind of air blockage? Haven't yet run engine as minor electrical fault , i'm hoping to do it it first thing tomorrow, but the amount of water needed to top it up doesn't seem right, any suggestions appreciated. Thanks. Iain
This is normal. What has happened is that the thermostat has closed because the engine is cold. When you added the coolant it pushed air up until it hit the thermostat. Once you get the engine running it will warm up and open the thermostat and the coolant level will drop allowing you to top up the rad again. Before you start the car put the radiator cap back on loose so that it doesn't blow coolant all over the place when the thermostat opens. If your owner's manual says to do something different when adding coolant then by all means follow their instructions. Hope this helps.
run the engine until it gets warm. shut the vehicle down and let it cool off. top fluid off again. you may need to repeat this. after topping off run car while keeping an eye on the temp gauge, alson turn the heat on high, if coolant is not full heat wont work.
there is probably a "burp" screw or hose on the vehicle to allow filling while pushing all the air out, i'm just not positive exactly where it is on that vehicle.
