Pop the rear seat base out. Just push against the seat base bottom on the sides of front of seat bottom with your knee and pull up with your fingers. Seat base will come up no problem. Retrieve your "favorite" thing and put the base back in, hold it down with your hands while pushing it towards the rear with your knee and it will pop over the holding clips. Ya got your piece back and no harm done.
The latch is most likely the issue. If the trunk is used a lot, the latch is misaligned or a foreign object obstructed the latch from closing. The latch itself could be damaged. Carefully inspect the opening of the latch and look for bent, mushroomed or damaged steel. I would have to see to know for sure, how to proceed.
The trunk lid unless damaged should be effortless to open.... unless you have a defective power closing device or a bent piston. Inspect for this before ordering parts from a Lexus dealer. The 430 is an exceptionally well made car and this problem sounds very out of character unless there has been some unknown damage. If on the other hand there was a bad component , LEXUS WOULD NORMALLY HAVE ISSUED A RECALL.
The trunk should auto close when you manually lower the lid to the almost closed position, but it is NOT designed to open up fully when you hit the trunk release on the key fob, nor when you open the trunk manually using the touch sensitive button under the lip of the trunk.
