I made the mistake of trying to change the starter motor on my 1997 316i, I had removed all the upper inlet manifold and the connecting wires and hoses in order to gain access to the top rear of the engine (can anyone please explain why with all the room at the bottom of the bell housing it is located at top ?),regardless, local garage have since said they'd only have charged 40 quid, when i asked them for some advice. So I have arranged to drive it to them. so I began to refit everything, everything went ok except it turned over but wouldn't fire(starter wasn't completely dead, but on it's way),then i found after probing in under the manifold, the I have found this electrical lead, thing, unlike all the other electrical connection which had the spring to retain it, this block has 3 male connectors in a smooth edge rectangle, i repeat unlike all the other connections this also has a domelike cover where it exits the block, and the wire itself feels as if it's sleeving black plastic that is , if I'm anywhere near describing it, can somebody please advise me about where this connects, thanks .Iain
...found that it should have connected to the conduit that carried many other electrical cables, but was out of sight ,obscured really by the upper inlet manifold, took off throttle cable to gain access to the side and managed to feed other hand from the rear and side and plugged it in, turned the key and she fired up instantly, lol, only i could have forgotten to plug in the important cable. doh !, ps many thanks to the guys who helped me with the water level problem, followed your advice and topped up after letting her heat up, touch wood all is well, many thanks again . iain
