you might have a blown head gasket, when the engine is cold remove the rad cap start the engine and look for air bubbling into the rad , if you see said bubbles then you need to have the head gasket replaced. PS Do not remove the rad cap when the engine is hot as you could be seriously injured/burnt

It is usually possible to leave the radiator hose attached and
simply remove the thermostat housing (also called a water outlet) and
flex the radiator hose enough to service the thermostat. It is good
practice, however, to remove the radiator hose so the thermostat housing
can be given a thorough cleaning. Debris on the thermostat housing
sealing surface can cause leaks.
Some applications may have electrical connections to sensors which
mount in the thermostat housing. Use care when detaching these
connectors.
Unfasten the thermostat housing bolts and remove the housing.
Remove the thermostat by simply pulling out; then remove and discard the gasket from the thermostat.

If you have the v6 then you will find the coolant temp sendor near the thermostat housing below the throttle body and just toward the front of the vehicle near the coolant bypass pipe. If you have a 4 cylinder then look at the rear of the cylinder head near thermostat.

grab the top radiator hose, follow it back to the engine. Where the hose connects, is the thermostat housing. The thermostat is inside. Remove 2 bolts, and you'll see it.
