You mean the shifter???? make sure that your brake lights work. it uses the brake light switch to unlock the shifter. if they dont work, check fuse and if the brake light switch is working correctly.

Why wont my van move fires up but doesnt move help

Start the engine and engage a gear leaving the parking brake firmly applied. Take a quick look underneath to check if the drive shafts or the propellor shaft is turning. If it is the cause of the problem is fairly obvious...

If nothing visible is turning the fault is either the clutch or gearbox and as the gearbox must be removed to inspect the clutch, at this stage it isn't necessary to know any more...

When i start my car and go to put it in gear it wont move.

When you say rocky spot, what do you mean? If you mean there were rocks in the roadway, you could have put a small hole in the transmission pan which leaked all the fluid out of it. First thing I would do is check the fluid level on the transmission dipstick and look for leaks on the ground under the car.

02 land rover wont move in any gear

Check the torque converter for proper installation. If bolts are missing from the torque converter, your DII won't move.

I just replaced rear axle bearings on a 2000 silverado it is still on jack stands,i can spin rear wheels but truck is in park. cannot spin drive shaft

The truck is in park, this means the parking pawl is engaged to keep the wheels
from moving and it locks the transmission/ driveshaft. Try putting it in neutral instead.

Car will start but will not move.

is it stick shift or auto box???
for stick shift check the clutch is working and the drive shafts are good
if the half shaft if snaped the prop shaft will turn but the car wont move!
if its an auto box check it is full of oil as well and then check the gear shift is working some times they just fall off,,,,,if the prop shaft is turning and the car wont move the fault is in the rear axle (drive shafts snaped)

Truck has vibration,Rear wheels jacked off up off ground, transmission in park, wheels still turn, driveshaft doesnt.

trucks have a limited slip rear end to help in turning. if both back tires are in the air they will turn, the drive shaft wont turn because its in park. to check the vibration you might check the balance of your tires

1990 Ford Thunderbird won't start

I take it as the car starts but it won't function well in drive and disables you from operating it.

Check the drive shaft as well as your torque converter and universal joints for alignment before you assume it's the transmission.

See from the torque { turning } of the parts to get the gearing to move the car. Any one of those could make horrible noises if they're not in proper alignment.

They work in close / direct conjunction with your cars transmission that all play vital and parts in allowing you to put it in gear to drive it.

2002 Windstar wont go into gear

These are common for the pump shaft splines stripping in the torque converter. The transmission will need to be removed to fix it. Before you condemn the trans, does the speedo move and the van doesn't or do you hear any grinding when you put it back into park? Or can you push the van in park (Broken CV shafts)?

Torque converter problem??

I would check the transfer case. The transmission is shifting manually thru the gears okay. The transfer case 4x4 module is not communicating to release the case so the vehicle will move.
Make sure all the fluid levels are full.
