Engine Clugs and Sputter while driving up a hill

The check engine light will come on when the management computer detects a fault that can affect exhaust emissions. When that happens the computer switches to a get you home programme and records a fault code.

A code read is required to discover the fault which should then be verified by independent tests before wasting money chasing down blind alleys.

possible plugged catalytic converter ! Have exhaust back pressure tested ! Have fuel pressure test done as well an have DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes check !

Have you checked the fluid level on flat ground while the engine is running ?

You can drive the car, but you need to get the computer scanned for trouble codes as soon as possible.

If the check engine light is not on, I doubt there is much you can do.
It sounds like one of the engine temp sensors or one of the other sensors. The engine temp sensor and the intake air temp sensor tell the computer what the outside air temp is and the coolant temp which allows the computer to regulate the amount of fuel going thru the injectors. Generally if one of the sensors has failed the check engine light should be on.
It could be low fuel pressure too.
You may have to have a shop check the sensors with a scanner and the fuel pressure with a gauge.

Do you have a MIL Light on? If so,what codes do you get?
Also,maybe a bad ignition coil

i have an 86 dodge ram 50 that sputters when i step on gas going up hill after it warms up ive changed the gasket twice with no luck solving problem it runs fine in neutral but in gear under a load it sputters

Have you changed your fuel filter lately? I had a vehicle once whose fuel tank that had a rusty seam. Every 10,000 miles or so, the rust flakes would clog the fuel filter, and the engine would sputter and stall when the vehicle was climbing uphill. If you idled for a bit, you could drive on for a ways, until the same thing happened.

A nearly dead fuel pump could cause the same problem, I suppose.
