If you're trying to take it apart to replace just that one c/v joint, don't. A new shaft assembly from Napa, Advanced auto Parts, International Car Parts, Auto Parts International, or www.rockauto.com is definitely the easy, and less expensive way out. If you are fighting the removal of the axle shaft from the stub shaft, patience, p b blaster, maybe a heavy duty air chisel, or a little bit of fire wrench will help. I did remove the stub shaft once only to have the axle then fall out when I put it on the bench.. You may lose your core value by beating on it but it might be the only way to remove it. ( Note: A little neversieze during reassembly goes a long way.) Keep rotating it while you're hitting the back of the joint.
I hope this helps.

How to change front u-joints on a 2001 ram 1500 4x4.

That model does not have U-joints, it uses constant velocity (CV) joints. It is much easier, and usually just as cost effective, to replace the half shafts (front axles that go from the differential to the wheels). Most parts stores don't even sell the CV units separately, and they are a lot more work to change.

Right side CV axle. why is the shaft moving in and out of the transfer case?

On most cars and trucks, the CV joint has a spring clip that holds the shaft inside the transfer case or differential.
If yours has that clip, it may be broken.
The axle would show a groove at the end where the clip would attach.

How do I replace my inner axle on the passenger side of my 2002 Dodge Ram 4x4 4.7L. I lent my truck out and the C clip let go of the CV axle. The intermediate axle spline is stripped and I need to change...

Lift and support front end on suitable jack stands preferably on frame. Remove right front cv axle, stub shaft, and seal. You will need to pull the right front brake caliper assembly loose and place to the side. Then remove bolts from shock and upper control arm and hub nut to do this. Next, remove axle lock actuator on passenger side of front axle. Place a drain pan underneath front diff cover and remove cover and drain axle. In the center of differential there will be an 8 mm head bolt holding spider gear cross-shaft. Remove bolt and cross-shaft only! Push inner axle in until clip clears inside of passenger spider gear. Set clip aside and push/pull axle shaft straight out to passenger side.

Axle will not come out of the axle housing

I quote from service manual

1 . Raise and support the truck. Remove the rear wheels, the brake drum or brake caliper and rotor. If this is a disc brake, support caliper with wire. Remove seal retainer nuts from axle
housing.

2 . Pull out the axle shaft from housing. Remove the snap ring and bearing race from the axle shaft. Cut the bearing retainer. Break the bearing cage using a hammer and chisel and remove cage and rollers.

3 . Remove the oil seal, the seal retainer and the parking brake assembly (rear). Using a hydraulic press and bearing splitter, press the inner race from axle shaft. Inspect axle shaft for seal wear. Ensure that the shaft is not bent.

Front drive shaft removal for 2001 izuzu trooper 4x4

Under the rubber boot inside the CV joint is a big spring clip round the edge , take this out and then the shaft pulls away from the axle with the CV on it .If you are fitting a new boot cut the old off if not just get the clips off and pull the boot back.

Did you take the shaft out from the wheel hub end too ?

Cv joint removal

Get the replacement cv axle and remove inner boot and clip and bearings. Do the same on the old axle. Replace bearing clip, cv shaft and reassemble. Do not try to remove the part from inside the front axle unless you want to spend about six hours of time and money.

Clicking noise in front end 2001 dodge ram 4x4

I have a 2002 Dodge 1500 Ram 4x4, quad cab and had the same problem. In 2wd the clicking was constant, in 4wd it would go away. Also I had no 4wd while in 4wd, found that out after a snow storm. I took my truck to a buddies garage (a Dodge mechanic), he said this is a common problem. He pulled the drivers side wheel, hub, axle and stub axle. The stub axle splines where it goes into the CV joint and and the internal splines in the CV joint were gone. Almost smooth even. The wheel bearing was completely wore out too. I ended up replacing the hub assembly, both the inner and outer axles. Not a cheap fix either I have about $600 repair bill, but it's back on the road now smooth and quite.
