Question about Hyundai Motor 2003 Sonata

1 Answer

I have same problem with my "new" 1999 Elantra.

When getting gas, it acts like it is full and splashes back. It is very difficult to add gas! I have had the car a week and really like it. I can feel the gas nozzle hitting something inside the tank and have tried every angle possible to insert the nozzle in order to possibly bypass that object if it is one. If it is a recall issue, I would ike to know about it. The light for empty will come on, so I do not thnk it is the gas gauge. Help!

If the nozzle is actually hitting something, then there's a problem. There shouldn't be anything interferring with the insertion of the nozzel.

Have you ever heard of fuel in the gas tank making thumping noise when it splashes up and back?

I have not, but I would guess it depends on what type of sender unit they use to let you know the level of gas in the tank. I would think the noise is more pronounced when the tank is closer to empty than full. Usually, the sender unit is part of the fuel pump, so you're looking at a few hundred bucks to get a new one. Turn up the radio :-)

Usually a sign of a problem with the gas tank vent or a restriction in the fill tube going down to the tank.

Having problem with trying to gas up the elantra. gas pump handle keeps clicking off. have to squeeze handle real lightly to fill up tank takes a long time to fill up. help

I know you probably won't like my answer, but seeing as I am a service tech for gas stations, the nozzle has a safety feature which shuts/kicks off when gas splashes back into the nozzle, thus keeping the gas from running over when the car is unattended and nozzle is locked. You can try pulling the nozzle back til it is barely in the tank or try a different gas station as some nozzles are different. As it is the shape of the fill tube on your vehicle. Hope this helped Tim

When pumping gas, the pump pops and shuts off like tank is full. It does this the hole time I am trying to fill the tank.

on the nozzle of the dispensers there is a safety kick off, this will activate whenever gas splashes back into the nozzle. there are two ways to make this not happen, the first is back the nozzle out so it does not have gas splashing back into the nozzle or find another gas station that have different nozzles.

Hesitating to go in drive. it goes, but slow. It is acting as it is not getting gas when I am giving it gas

If the engine just revs up and vehicle does not move much check transmission fluid. If low add some asap. If it is full and dark in color the transmission is or has failed.

I have a hyundai elantra 2000 have a code po442 and gasing up it act like it full so what the problem also it has over 120,000 miles on it

Hello! The 2000 Hyundia line has a common fault in the design of their evaporator system; The handling of fuel fumes. If, at any time, you may have overfilled the gas tank, gas will saturate the charcoal canister. This causes small pieces of charcoal to circulate within the evaporation control system, clogging it up, not allowing the gas tank to be filled. Does your Elantra have trouble accelerating, run rough, or stall? Probably so. Take the car to someone you trust and have them flush the evaporator system with the canister removed. You will more than likely need a new canister.

It is the filler neck it causes splash back.
