Question about 2008 Honda Element

My dealer recommended brake fluid change after 15K miles. I thought that was unnecessary. Was I wrong?

Hey Ghost; My 04, Santa Fe has 62,000 miles on it and needs transmission service, my dealer / service center wants to do a flush using MOC fluid with an additive. They tell me they can do only a drain...


no i dont know much about this moc but i would go to autozone buy the oem spIII fluid do it myself but i would only do it recommended intervals no need do it all those extra times you just be wasting your time and money hope this helps

Transmission maintenance schedule. How often does the Factory recommend to change the transmission fluid. V6 w/4wd average use.


Usually a transmission service interval is every 30k miles. I would have it checked, or check it yourself, at 15k miles to see if it looks or smells burned (dark red in color with a pungent scent) to determine if it needs to be serviced before 30k miles.

I have a '03 Monte Carlo SS and I replaced the rotors at 76k miles and the rotors need replaced again at 89k miles. It shouldn't need rotors again so soon should it?


I wouldn't think you'd need them again that soon. Unless you have some calipers sticking and causing the rotors to get hot and warp. Do you have a shimmy when applying the brakes at higher speeds?

2006 BMW 325i - low oil level 5 different times. 12,500 miles, 21,290 miles 27,216 miles (dealer replaced head), 33,500 miles & 42,100 miles. Dealer claims nothing wrong with occasional low oil!! only...


There is a lot wrong with "low oil" and low oil is not normal in a low mileage healthy engine.

The dealer is fobbing you off in the hope you will go away.

If the oil is being changed at least every 5000 miles or so there should be minimum oil depletion between changes with only very minor top up needed. Some oil consumption is normal but it should be minimal.

If the oil level is dropping to a very low level in about 4000 - 5000 miles of normal motoring you have a significant problem. The oil is either leaking out or the engine is burning excessive oil or a combination. If there is no leak through faulty seals or by other means such as oil escaping into the cooling passages of the engine, then there is excessive burning.

These engines are known for excessive oil consumption because the problem is a common one in the 06, 05, 04 and previous year builds back to about 98/99. The dealers know all about this problem - as does BMW - and they will try to fob you off until the car is out of warranty because the fix is expensive.

From what you say the problem has not been fixed on your car. Document the oil loss and insist on your warranty rights because your engine is using excessive oil and this is NOT normal in a properly functioning motor with as few miles as yours has. Make it clear to the dealer that you are well aware that excessive oil consumption is a common problem in many of the 325 petrol engines and you want it fixed under warranty.

Then sell the car as these vehicles will cost you quite a bit in repairs once out of warranty and once you clock up around 60000 miles or more. If you have an auto you can expect major problems at about 65000 miles (later if you are lucky) and replacement of the transmission will be necessary. Once you notice any significant problem with the auto transmission it is on it's way out.

My 2004 GMC Envoy SLT has 7,500 miles and due to the fact that I've been working overseas for the past 5 years, it's been sitting in storage, with frequent start-ups and is driven every couple of weeks....


While it never hurts to change the fluids, that may be unnecessary in some instances. The oild should likely be changed, as well as a new filter. The coolant may not need to be changed since it is designed for about 100,000 to 150,000 miles. The transmission fluid and brake fluid will be okay, as will the power steering fluid. The gasoline may be a different story unless you have added the necessary additives. Not certain how many gallons may be in your tank, but if it's all of that age and has not been stabilized I would recommend draining the tank (and maybe changing the fuel filter once you have burned through a few tanks of gasoline. the fuel filter in underneath the vehicle, costs about $20 for the part and $20-30 labor to replace.

Absolutely, if you are hearing grinding noises, that's the internal gears. Also, if you put the car into Drive, Reverse and it takes a moment to go into gear, that's also a sign of a transmission going.

Just a FYI about transmissions, if you purchase a new car and plan on keeping your car for a while, I recommend changing the fluid every 15,000 miles. The dealer recommends 30,000 miles. But here is the kicker, you can acutally do harm in changing the fluid if you haven't done the normal maintenance scheudle fluid changes (every 15K or 30K). The reason is because as old fluid breaks down and if you don't change it and then put new fluid in after 80.000 miles, the new fluid become too corrosive and acutally breaks down the seals and causes slippage in the transmission.

I'm not sure of what your mileage is, but it sounds like the transmission is about to go based on what you are saying.

30,000 mile service


Do you have the owners manual? It will list what the manufacturer recommends at 30k. Better yet, ask the dealer what is included for the $600+. If you post the list to me, I'll give you my opinion on what I recommend to have done, and what I believe isn't necessary. I have driven many cars to very high mileage, and all of these vehicles never went to a dealer for service (new and used). I feel the many service checks are for people that abuse their car, have money to burn, and want to support the dealerships service department. Honda makes a quality vehicle, if you change fluids and filters, you will enjoy it for many miles/years. Hope to hear from you with list.
