Question about 1998 Mazda Protege
The check engine light is on in my 1998 Mazda protege lx. I don't know why, it does not make any sense at all. We just had new brake pads put on the car a couple of weeks ago. It is overdue for an inspection. Last two years we went through the same thing, and had work done on the car. I don't know why it keeps doing this. It seems like it goes on again when we haven't driven it in awhile. My husband let it sit for a few months before driving it again because we had to get the brake pads replaced.
If the light was flashing when it came on, then it means your engine is misfiring.
A solid light can mean anything from a loose/faulty gas cap to a transmission issue.
This light comes on when the computer detects a fault of some sort in its diagnostic tests. If it keeps detecting this issue, the light will remain on. If the light turns off, then it has detected that the issue may no longer be present.
In order to find out what the exact reason was for your light, You need to have your car computer scanned to retrieve the code that the computer would have stored when the light triggered. Most garages will do this free of charge. The code will tell you what may have caused the light to initially turn on. Until you get this code, it's impossible to determine what parts need to be checked or replaced.
Unfortunately, with some cars, there will be problems that the computer keeps picking up and throwing the light.
