Question about Lincoln LS

2 Answers

2002 Lincoln LS V* My air bag light is on and will not go off unless the car is turned off. As a result, I cannot pass emmissions. When I first start the car, it blinks three times, pauses and then blink two more times. This pattern happens for a total of five times and then the light stays on for the remainder of the time I am in the car. The clockspring is not broken because the horn works. I was told that this was seat belt related. I also did some research that is leading me to believe that the wiring under my drivers side seat may be disconnected due to moving the seat positiion. I am not sure what I should do or where I should go and more importantly how much it will cost to get fixed as i am ona tight budget.

I just want to pass emissions. To be honest, I could careless whether the air bag works or not at this time. If I can disable it myself or have a mechanic disable it for cheaper then I would much rather go that route.

Do you know which fuse I need to disable, what color is it and how do I access it? Is it under the driver seat?

I was told that I could disable the entire unit so that the air bag light is turned off. Can I just reset the light? Is there a code that can be put in so that the light can be temporarily disabled. To be honest I just want to pass inspection, I could careless if the acutaul air bag works or not. I just need the light to go off.

Thanks, what does the harness look like?

  • cpoussaint1 Oct 08, 2009

This harness connection is related to the seat belt, air bag or both? What causes the connectors to becomes loose? Will the air bags deploy if I disconnect and reconnect these connectors?

  • cpoussaint1 Oct 08, 2009

Ok I will try this but before you go, is there anything else that it could be? The horn and steering controls work fine so I dont think that it is a clockspring issue. If I find that the wires are fine, is there a way to reset the air bag so that it goes off temporarily?

  • cpoussaint1 Oct 08, 2009

Any other suggestions? I checked the fuses, everything seems to be intact.

When you say pull the fuse, do you mean cut the wire? The wires are connected to a main connector that is then connected to a harness. What color is the air bag fuse and how do I disconnect it?

Check under both your seat and the passenger seat. you should see a harness connection under both seats. Push them really tight together and see what happens. This is a known issue with Ford Vehicles

Pull them apart and inspect the connectors to see if there's any rust inside. If all is good, then push them back together and make sure you do it hard and make sure they're nice and tight. These connectors are known for coming loose

  • super_guy Oct 08, 2009

sorry. I meant the plugs. under your seat, there will be some wires that go from the seat to a plug (harness) that then connects to another plug (harness) which will have wires running into the floorboard. This plug may be exposed between the seat and the floorboard, hidden in the floorboard where it comes out, or under the seat

  • super_guy Oct 08, 2009

I believe it affects your airbags and your seat belts (varies on vehicle as some cars have locking tensioners in the seat belts that lock if you pull the seat belt really hard while others won't trigger unless in an accident). It lets the computer know that there's a passenger in the seat and to arm the airbag and the seat belt tensioner (in some vehicles). I think if you disconnect it, the airbag light may stay on.

As for the cause, I believe it's just from vibration.

Try this as well if everything under the seat checks out...

Check connector 215 under the dash behind left kick panel. It is a 3
pin connector but uses only 2 pins. colors are black/orange stripe and
red with orange stripe. examine for corrosion with magnifying glass and
bright flashlight. clean with electrical connector cleaner and then
    coat terminals with dielectric grease

You can either pull the fuse. Or get the unit serviced, which most likely should be done by the dealership. Even I as a mechanic for 8 years, would rather have dealership do it. They have better coverage if the unit does deploy. You can pull the fuse to disarm unit and light. It will be around $400 +

No way to reset the airbag, Possibly with an obd2. At least you can reset the computer. Otherwise I would pull fuse. Do not touch sensor though. Not with the fuse still in anyways. If clockspring and wires are ok, then it is the air bag module or circuit itself

No do not cut the wire, just pull the fuse. Many are the big maxi fuse type. In fuse center under the hood.

I'll guess that your air bag light is on as well? Sounds Like you need a new clockspring in the steering wheel. This device replaced the old copper slip rings when air bags come out.

2002 lincoln ls air bag light flashes 3times for 5 times in a row

The light can flash a two digit code - try counting the flashes between a pause.
You will need to get the system scanned and cleared once the repairs are made.

Air bag light on insturment panel rewmains on,

I have the same problem on my 2001 LS. I found that the air bag computer is under the driver's seat, and when they installed it at the factory the wires that connect to it are to short. When the seat is moved all the way forward or back the wires are pulled or ripped from the computer. The connections are a special locking type, so you must replace them with the OEM Lincoln part. I think that Lincoln has an updated repair kit to fix this problem, so you should call your Lincoln Dealer's parts dept.

My son got in his 2002 Lincoln LS(V8) and his Airbag light came on and stays on. Can you tell me how to get it off or if this is a serious problem.

All airbag systems have a computer, or controller that looks at resistance. If you have an issue, the light goes on. You need to get the air bag system "scanned" to see what the issue is.

2002 lincoln ls...front air bag indicator light stays on after flashing 3 times...sensor prob?...dai5190

You will have to get the airbag code read to be sure but I have had to replace the clockspring in my steering wheel and also the airbag wiring harness under the passenger seat on my 2002 Lincoln LS, all in less than one year. If you or someone you know can help you remove the seat you can do the wiring harness yourself, it is a simple clip.

If the air bag light is on there is a problem with the air bag. The light means the air bags will not deploy in an accident. Only a qualified tech should work on air bags.

2002 lincoln ls engine lights?

p1000 dont worry about. That comes up as a subfactor of pulling codes. Definitely no need to sell. Secondary air injection I believe is an electric motor that gives fresh oxygen into exhaust manifold to waste out any leftover fumes. I believe california emmissions only. Need to look at fuses. Sometimes water got in those air motors and temporarily made them short. Might replace a fuse and rock on! Even if it needs the whole unit the car is still worth it. Thanks.

Air bag light is on... The str wheel controls r never correct

You have a bad clock spring. This is located behind the steering wheel and all electrical functions from steering wheel must go thru it. Pretty common problem on this model. The steering wheel and the steering column trim would have to be removed to replace it.
