The car makes a howling noise while driving it

The car ---2002 Grandprix 3.8 engine makes a loud howling noise while driving it starts after 15- 20 miles a hour, the faster you go the louder it is. The tires are good and have just been rotated. The sound seems to come from the front left or maybe the center. It idles very smooth, the rpm's are where they should be for driving. The car drives very smooth with no steering problems. Any ideas would be appreciated. From Indiana

Well did the noise start after the tires were rotated?could be choppy tires,,,if not ,i strongly think it sounds like a bad wheel bearing,,,,if you drive and while its making the noise turn left and right quick and see if the noise gets louder and which way turning makes it louder,,if you turn leftand it gets louder its usually the right wheels bearing as you are putting load on it, if it makes the noise louder while turning right its the left wheel bearing,,,got it

What if it gets quieter when you are driving and turn the wheel to the left? I was thinking of starting with the Right Front first and hope that would take care of it!?! Any advice, two shops have looked at it, when I had my oil changed and when I just had tires put on it, and nobody thinks there is anything wrong with it?!? But it get's load at freeway speeds!

Does the sound change when you turn the wheel a little side to side while driving??if it does i sounds like it might be a wheel bearing going bad,the easiest way to check for this is to jack up the front of the car on a level surface and put it in neutral and spin the wheels one at a time by hand and listen or feel for a roughness coming from the bearing, you can also grab the wheel at the 12 oclock and 6 oclock positions and see if there is any movement up and down with the bearings, hope this helps

Check your left front brakes or hub assembly bearing may not be completely gone but will make noise if bad... Good Luck!

Testimonial: "Thanks for your help on the howling noise. It was the wheel bearing, but instead of the left one it was the right side that was shot."

What is causing the loud howling from my 2002 Suburban?

Hello I don't know exactly where you live however, I'd say the loud " roaring noise is possibly the clutch fan. The reason why they are so loud and make the roaring sound is because as you accelerate the fan blades spread outward but are under resistance .It's activated by ambient engine temp. They are very noisy when engaged and tend to work more on rural roads, stop and go and when A/C is being used. etc. The brake light is on because the fluid is below the fluid level sensor basically telling you to check and or add brake fluid. In addition the ABS light has came on because it had ran low on brake fluid sending a warning signal to the computer from the ABS brake control module. The best thing to do is to keep up on the fluid level find that leak and repair it.

Very loud howling noise coming from front driver's side; replaced the wheel bearing 3 times within a month, and the problem is still there.

Have you checked you tire closely.Change it with the one on the other side and see if the sound transfer to that side.

I have a very loud humming/howling noise under my feet when driving. I do no that I need a cv boot. Can that cause this loud noise?

A humming or howling can be cause by a dry, worn out wheel bearing. Also tires that aren't worn evenly across the contact surface of the tire will cause a wheel bearing like noise.
