Question about 2001 Kia Sportage

1 Answer

My 98 kia sportage lost all power and stalled. The car will turn over strongly, but not start. I just replaced plugs and wires. Maybe a fuel pump issue? How can I tell?

The belts are in working order and the plugs are working. I'm guessing it's just not getting the fuel and not sure how to check if it is the relays or actual fuel pump.

If it is turning over and sounds as if there is no resistance when turning over. Check the timing belt. If the timing belt fails the crankshaft turns but the cam does not turn. If the is not a peep hole to see the cam gear you can pull out a spark plug, keep wire away from you, and stick finger over hole where spark plug came from, then have some one crank the engine. Does the cranking force your finger out of the hole with force from compression? If not the timing belt is probably broken, the cranking should force your finger out of the hole with force indicating that the engine has compression. If your finger was forced out timing belt isn't the problem. Now you need to check for spark and if the engine is getting gas. To check for spark stick a screw driver in the spark plug wire and set it near a ground source but not touching ground. As someone cranks the engine over watch and see if you see spark jumping from the screw driver to ground you have spark. If you have spark your problem is gas, if you have no spark ignition is the problem. Depending on your mechanical ability you now have to decide if it is safe for you go on or take the car to a shop. If you would like to go on leave a comment for me and I'll get back to you. Just remember you must be careful with any other tests from this point on due to fire and damage to ignition system can occur if not very careful.

Have you checked the fuel pump relay to see if it is sending power to the pump ? The computer grounds the relay when the computer "sees" oil pressure or engine RPM.

2002 kia sportage fuel pump needed replacing so we did and now car won't go

There maybe an air lock in the fuel line.
Try pouring a little fuel down the carby and then start the engine, you may need to do this a few times until the air lock is cleared.

CAR WILL NOT START TURNS OVER THATS ALL

I have a bad feeling that your fuel pump is gone or a wiring problem. the fuel filter if not on the outside then it's in the tank. Try to bang the tank when someone is cranking it over. If it starts you need a fuel pump

Problem with kia sportage no start has spark ,good fuel ,injector sig compression over 150 ,

i just put a new fuel pump in a 97 sportage with the same problems but now it starts and idles just fine but as soon is itry to give it some gas it stalls out and starts backfiring through the intake,i put new plugs and wires on after that started up better but still same problem, me thinks its the kickdown cable for the transmission is causing it because the gas pedal is tight but the kickdown cable hooked up to the throttle body is stuck out so i think the transmission is sensing wideopen throttle therefore its advancing the timing way too much and causing it to stall, or it could just need a new timing belt, but i took a peek at it and saw my camshift timing marks were in the right spot and lined up together however, i dint see the crankshaft timing mark so i dont know yet but once i fgure it out i will def let you know because its been in my bay for 3 days now and its pissing me off hope this helps a little

2000 kia sportage will not start have replaced fuel pump

unplug ecm connector engine control module has faulty connectors due to pins I recommend to unplug and plug connector and try to start, module is located under passenger front seat frontal foot area you need to remove a cover before you do the actual disconnection touch the door striker to rid your
self of static electricity. also check relays for fuel pump and ecm power on right side of engine compartment (as you would sit on
driver seat) (buy kia relays) and for danerl p possible faulty ignition
coils and spark plugs due to arking, replaced spark plugs wires too, check valve cover for leaking oil into spark plugs possible codes po300 -po304 set .
