First thing you want to do is ground the test terminal which is the top right hand terminal, just make a jumper wire and attach the other end to the terminal to its left. When you look at the OBD plug under the steering column, the two top right hand terminals need to be grounded.

Move your ignition switch to "on", DO NOT TURN THE ENGINE OVER.
Your "Check Engine" light should be flashing. The codes stored here will flash the "check engine" light. It starts by flashing 12. That will loook like one flash, a pause, then two flashes....a longer pause and then the next code. Remember when you first see the codes flash and you write down code 12, this is not a fault code, it is more like a communication between the computer and diagnostics, it is only to get your attention and show you how the flash works, Each code is flashed three times, then it moves on to the next. When all the codes stored are flashed three times, you may see code 12 come again, that will signify the end, sometimes it comes up, sometimes it does not.

These codes are kept in numerical order not the order of when the problem happened, they so give a chronologocal time line of events. They are simply listed here.

When you are done with the codes, they can be cleared by removing power to the power to the ECM for 30 seconds. This is best done by removing the fuse the powers the ecm and not disconnecting the battery for all of the vehicle.

Hope this helps, I've done it quite a few times for my Tahoe.

I have 2007 hhr and the code is p0171

This code is triggered by the first downstream (front) O2 sensor. The sensor provides a reading of the air:fuel ratio leaving the engine's cylinders, and the vehicles powertrain/engine control module (PCM/ECM) uses that reading and adjusts to keep the engine running at that optimum ratio of 14.7:1. If something is not right and the PCM cannot maintain the 14.7:1 ratio, but rather there is too much air, it triggers this code.

Ssei is it an obd 1 or an obd 2, my engine lite is on but I get no reading from an obd 2 and a conflick of wich 2 terminals to cross for an obd 1

94 and 95 bonneville's have a odb1 system but the plug under the dash for the code reader is for odb2/.
you have to get a code reader that will read odb1 and odb2 with a manufacture special plug to read them.
also the computer in the 94-95 are only used in those 2 years.
new one at most auto parts stores is about $100.00
cheap compared to other years.
if you have lots of codes and it runs good but just turns itself off all the time it's the computer.
I had to replace 2 so far one in a 94 and one in a 95.

You can get hte codes from this BMW by turning the ignition key to the run position and then press the accelerator pedal to the floor 5 times, it will enter the diagnostic mode, count the flashes just like obd 1. Hope this helps, let me know
