Thanks....I was rushing when I posted last. I have a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix with a 3.1L auto trans. I have found out the part that is broken is called the evap control valve. I replaced it and still have a misfire, although not random anymore. Changed all 6 plugs and wires, and while in the midst of replacing the intake manifold gasket to seal a water leak I replaced 2 push rods. The push rods developed a noise the same day I was going to do the gasket so I killed 2 birds with one stone, or so I thought. I don't have my scanner and guess I will have to bite the bullet and take it to have it diagnosed....hope I won't need an engine Hummmmm

If you have the 2.5, then it is the crankcase vent valve (pcv). if its a quad-4 engine then it is the canister purge control valve.

Reasons for misfire in a 3.8 ford wind star

What year and how many miles on it? Tune up, intake leaks, on the inside of the plenum there are grommets that will get hard and cause misfires, EGR, O2 sensors, Air filter, fuel filter and bad catalytic converters, vacuum leaks, head gaskets, Then we can go to the computer side of it. I have a 2000 windstar have been though most of this. Besides this stuff, it's been a good van.

Heavy idle, random misfire code 04 trailblazer

I would start with the inlet manifold gasket, these are know to break down causing vacuum leaks which can cause this issue, also check around engine for other vacuum leaks

Hi, my 2002 malibu hesitate and whistle when I accelerate. It only works fine under 20mph, but when it exceed, it whistles and hesitate on accelerating. On highway, it barely goes up to 60mph and when...

Whistle noise indicates a major vacuum leak. Maybe something loose in the intake system. Maybe a vacuum hose disconnected. Will explain lose of power also.

P0304 Code indicates a misfire on cylinder 4
Most likely causes for this are bad wire, bad spark plug, bad coil(s) or bad dist cap if so equiped.
A vacuum leak can also cause a misfire.
Seeing the vehicle is going on 13 years old replacing the wires and the plugs would be a good place to start, and could be the solution

My 1997 pontiac grand am just started flashing the check engine light and seems to be resting and using higher rpms. what should I be looking for?

If the check engine light is flashing this indicates that a cylinder or cylinders are misfiring. If the rpms are increasing you may have a vacuum leak causing the misfire. Would check for any disconnected vacuum lines or a possible plenum/upper intake gasket leaking. To do this you can spray induction cleaner around the upper plenum to check and see if the gasket may be leaking.

My 1999 bravada has a miltiple misfire, how can i know what the problem is and how to fix it. code P0300 also a vacum leak, how can i find the leak. code P0180

I would start with the multiple misfire - replace plugs and check wires if there are any.
The vacuum leak can be tough, but look for common failures, like broken or removed vacuum lines. Sometimes you can actually hear the leak. I don't know the particulars of this engine, but we have a leak on our olds in the plenum gasket (between the throttle body and the intake manifold) Found it by spraying carb cleaner around the area.

You could have either a vacuum line leak or an intake gasket leak. Often an intake gasket leak will also cause an oil consumption issue as the actual vacuum leak is at the bottom side of the intake and will result in not ony a misfire at idle but will pull engine oil into the intake causing a loss of engine oil. The other primary sources of leaks I find are broken plastic vacuum lines, usually on the passenger or rear side of the engine. The throttle plates on these do cause a loud hissing noise [normal] so it's often hard to pinpoint an actual vacuum leak unless the air cleaner is on which mutes some of the normal air noise.

Can a bad intake plenum leak antifreeze into the engine on a 2002 century 3.1?The computer code was misfire #1 cylinder. Complete tune-up done, same problem, new#1 injector, same problem. Now the coolant...

I see a lot of lower intake gasket leaks on these but usually you get an external leak or you'll find coolant mixed with the oil, not a misfire. Upper plenum is dry on the 3.1 and just bolts onto the top of the lower intake. We usually apply pressure to the cooling system overnight with the spark plug removed from the misfiring cylinder. If there is coolant in the cylinder come morning then you only have to figure out where it is coming from. If the plenum is removed during the test you might be able to see where the coolant is or isn't coming from with a borescope by looking down the intake runner.

Changing the spark plugs on a 2000 forerunner

the upper intake will have to remove the plenum to access the spark plugs...usually you are able to unbolt the plenum only and disconnect the front connectors and/or vacuum lines. and tilt the plenum up and out of the way to access the plugs... take care when doing this you can damage the engine if not careful. make sure you get a new intake plenum well as the valve cover gaskets...the rubber rings that seal the spark plug tubes from oil tend to leak causing a misfire. you already have to pull the plenum might as well do the valve cover gasket while you are so far in it.
