    Also, if you feel that your car is still operating at above avg. temps you can replace the thermostat for the radiator. they often go bad and there are ways to test it without going to the shop, but for how inexpensive and easy they are to change, you may as well buy a new one.

Air Temperature Sensors
The air temperature sensors are a 2-wire negative temperature co-efficient thermistor. The vehicle uses the following air temperature sensors:
• Ambient Air Temperature Sensor
• Inside Air Temperature Sensor Assembly
• Upper Left Air Temperature Sensor
• Upper Right Air Temperature Sensor
• Lower Left Air Temperature Sensor
• Lower Right Air Temperature Sensor
A signal and a low-reference circuit enables the sensor to operate. As the air temperature surrounding the sensor increases, the sensor resistance decreases. The sensor signal voltage decreases as the resistance decreases. The sensor operates within a temperature range between -40°C (-40°F) to 101°C (215°F). The sensor signal varies between 0-5 volts.
The input of the duct air temperature sensors are different from the ambient and inside sensors. The HVAC control module converts the signal to a range between 0-255 counts. As the air temperature increases the count value will decrease.

The HVAC control module monitors the upper left and upper right duct temperature sensors when the mode switch is in the VENT or BI-LEVEL positions. The HVAC control module monitors the lower left and lower right duct temperature sensors when the mode switch is in the DEFOG, FLOOR or FRONT DEFROST positions. The duct sensors are used to measure the temperature of the air exiting the ducts to help maintain a consistent cabin air temperature. These duct sensor inputs provide the HVAC control module a way to determine if the engine needs to be started to maintain a specific air temperature. If an upper duct sensor circuit failure is detected the HVAC module will not request an engine start to help cool the cabin. A lower duct sensor circuit failure will not prevent the engine from starting.

There is none on your vehicle , temperature control is by a cable .There is a evaporator temperature sensor , this is used to keep the evaporator from freezing up !
Air Temperature Control The air temperature control regulates the HVAC system air temperature in any mode. An air temperature control cable mechanically links the air temperature control to the air temperature door.
Evaporator Temperature Sensor The evaporator temperature sensor will not allow an A/C request to the body control module (BCM) at temperatures less than 0°C (32°F).

My 1998 gmc jimmy slt has a heating problem. The heater wont turn off. As long as the car is on the heater is on full blast. The fans work and everything knob wise works but the heater is always on.


The air temperature valve electronic actuator positions the temperature door according to the temperature setting of the temperature control on the temperature control knob. For the full COLD temperature setting, the temperature control returns approximately 12 volts to the air temperature valve electric actuator. When the temperature setting is changed to full HOT, the temperature door is moved to the warm position and the output drops to about 0 volts. For a temperature setting in the mid range, the temperature door is positioned according to the voltage supplied through the temperature control switch.

  1. Disconnect the air temperature valve sensor.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position.
  3. Move the headlamp switch to the PARK position.
  4. Using the J 35616-A , connect a J 39200 Digital Multimeter (DMM) between cavity 8 (CKT 733) of the air temperature valve motor connector and ground.
  5. Move the temperature control knob from the HOT position to the COLD position.
Does the voltage vary smoothly and continuously within the specified range?

DTC P1114 - Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor Circuit Intermittent Low Voltage/IAT - B Circuit Low Input



The engine coolant temperature sensor is a thermistor (a resistor which changes value based on temperature) mounted in the engine coolant passage. Low coolant temperature produces a high resistance 100,000 ohms at -40 oC (-40 oF) while high temperature causes low resistance 70 ohms at 130 oC (266 oF).

OPERATION
The VCM supplies a 5 volt signal to the engine coolant temperature sensor through a resistor in the VCM and measures the voltage. The voltage will be high when the engine is cold. The voltage will be low when the engine is hot. By measuring the voltage, the VCM calculates the engine coolant temperature. Engine coolant temperature affects most systems the VCM controls.

The scan tool displays engine coolant temperature in degrees. After engine start-up, the temperature should rise steadily to about 9O oC (194 oF) then stabilize when thermostat opens. If the engine has not been run for several hours (overnight), the engine coolant temperature and intake air temperature displays should be close to each other. When the VCM detects a malfunction in the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor circuit, the following Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) s will set.

The EGR temperature sensor is a thermistor that modifies a voltage signal sent from the Engine Control Module (ECM). This modified signal then returns to the ECM as an input signal. As the temperature increases, EGR temperature sensor resistance decreases.
This sensor is not used to control the engine system. It is used only for the on board diagnosis

Mode Actuator 2000 – 2005 Mode and Left Air Temperature Actuator gm-10-00-1560.gif

To Remove:
  1. Remove the left side sound insulator panel.
  2. Remove the knee bolster.
  3. Remove the instrument panel cluster. (Automatic HVAC)
  4. Disconnect the electrical connector from the left air temperature actuator. (Automatic HVAC)
  5. Remove the left air temperature actuator. (Automatic HVAC)
  6. Disconnect the electrical connector from the mode actuator.
  7. Remove the mode actuator.
To Install:
  1. Align the mode door levers with the cam slots.
  2. Install the mode actuator and torque the fasteners to 12 in-lbs (1.4 Nm).
  3. Connect the electrical connector to the mode actuator.
  4. Install the left air temperature actuator and torque the fasteners to 12 in-lbs (1.4 Nm). (Automatic HVAC)
  5. Connect the electrical connector to the left air temperature actuator. (Automatic HVAC)
  6. Install the instrument panel cluster. (Automatic HVAC)
  7. Install the knee bolster.
  8. Install the left side sound insulator panel.
  9. Recalibrate the actuators.

4.2L Engine To Remove:
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery.
  2. Drain the coolant from the engine.
  3. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor connector. Engine coolant temperature sensor removal and installation gm-04-42-1509.gif

  4. Remove the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor from the engine.
To Install:
  1. Apply thread sealer P/N 12346004 or equivalent to the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor threads.
  2. Install the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor into the engine. Torque the sensor to 12 ft-lb (16 Nm).
  3. Connect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor connector.
  4. Refill the engine with coolant.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery.
5.3L & 6.0L Engines To Remove:
  1. Drain the coolant from the engine.
  2. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor connector. Engine coolant temperature sensor removal and installation removeect.gif

  3. Remove the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor from the left cylinder head.
To Install:
  1. Apply thread sealer P/N 12346004 or equivalent to the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor threads.

A educated guess I would have to say there is a problem with HVAC control module ! electronics you know ! But that's not the way to do things ! There could be codes stored in the module. The Chevy dealer my have a reflash bulletin for this problem . Then can reflash , reprogram the control module ! The first place to start is checking for codes in the HVAC module.
The HVAC control module is a class 2 device that interfaces between the operator and the HVAC system to maintain air temperature and distribution settings. The battery positive voltage circuit provides power that the control module uses for keep alive memory (KAM). If the battery positive voltage circuit loses power, all HVAC DTCs and settings will be erased from KAM. The body control module (BCM), which is the vehicle mode master, provides a device on signal.

The scan tool parameter for the duct air temperature sensors are the actual state of the signal circuit. The default action ensures that the HVAC system can adjust the inside air temperature near the desired temperature until the condition is corrected.
The ambient air temperature sensor mounts underhood and can be affected by city traffic, by idling, and by restarting a hot engine. Therefore, the HVAC control module filters the value of the ambient air temperature sensor for temperature display.
