Question about Dodge Intrepid

1 Answer

I installed new intake monifold gaskets because the bottom one was sucking air in and my 1996 dodge intrepid 3.5 liter engine would run at 2300 RPM'S. After changing the gaskets the car is hard to start and if you stomp the gas pedal to the floor the RPM'S will go to 2000 and stop and will not go any higher. If I push the pedal down slowly the RPM'S will increase as normal. When car is in drive if you slowly increase pedal all OK if pressed down fast the engine will bogdown and not shift correctly. If you are going down the road at 55 MPH and stomp it to the floor it will bogdown if let up on pedal a little it shifts somtimes down and speed up and sometimes it will shift to far down and acts like I down shifted to slow down at times RPM'S will increse and will not speed up or shift or try to shift and car will start jurking and if at 55 and push slowly it will increase speed slowly at a certain point it will down shift like to pass sometimes it will try to shift and jurk or down shift to the wrong gear.

Take it to bits again and check the gasket you put on and all the other gaskets as it still sounds like you have air sucking and a blockage somewhere else so check out all parts you done and the parts you dident

After car is warm it rev's high like it is not shifting in to next gear is that a transmission issue

Could be a vaccum leak or Intake manifold leak. If you spray brake clean around the intake manifold and the idle returns to normal you have found the leak. Do not use water as this could hydrolock the engine causing further damage.

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301). Refer to Section 14-01 .

  1. Remove the two idle air control valve retaining bolts.

Installation
  1. NOTE: If scraping is necessary, be careful not to damage idle air control valve gasket surfaces, or drop material into intake manifold (9424) or throttle body (9E926) (depending upon application).

Clean idle air control valve gasket mating surfaces.
  1. To install idle air control valve, reverse Removal procedure.

How often should I bleed air from the cooling system?

check your oil and make sure you dont ahve a blown head gasket and that your thermostat is good (throw it in boiling water and see if it opens), and if you are losing water/coolant with no drips or puddles than it may be leaking in a cylinder which means bad head gasket as well

My dodge intrepid

if it is the 3.5 liter v6 then the thermostat will be at the top of the engine where the radiator hose hooks up to the engine there will be a short pipe where radiator hooks up and two or three bolts holding it to the engine it is not under the plastic intake plenum it is forward of that .
