How much does it cost to recharge the freon in 2001 Honda Civic?

How much does it cost to recharge the freon in 2001 Honda Civic LX? After about 30 minutes, it starts to blow hot air for a few minutes, especially when going uphill and, after about 3-5 minutes, cool air will come back on. This started to occur on days when it was very hot outside.

First things first, this can be done through DIY:

Step 1
Attach the recharging hoses to your system. The hoses from the gauges attach to the compressor of your air conditioning system. Attach the shorter hose to the can of Freon.

Step 2
Open the valve on the can for several seconds to purge the air from the system. Tighten the hose connection again and close the valve.

Step 3
Start the car's engine and turn on the air conditioner on HIGH. Allow the refrigerant to enter the system by slowly opening the valve for the low-side manifold. Make sure to hold the can upright, not allowing any liquid Freon to enter the system.

Step 4
Close the valve and remove the hose from the low-side fitting after the can is empty. Be careful when removing the can as there is still some Freon in the can.

Step 5
Repeat these steps if your system needs more than one can of Freon. Adding too much Freon is worse than not having enough and can damage the air conditioning system.

The cost will vary depending on local. But to start I would have a general A/C service/ check done, you can normally have this done for less than 100.00 and in some cases I have seen shops offer free A/C checks. The reason I recommend this is because you have several components that can cause this problem (not just low freon), and if it is low then you have a leak somewhere that will need to be repaired and will be found upon inspection of the system. Around central Texas 134a cost about 20.00 per pound and A/C services are around 39,99 plus freon. Again have it checked. It could be something simple.

Well in American that's about 5 miles to the gallon. Some
of our military tanks do better. I would take it to Honda
immediately, you may have a fuel leak, or some other
dangerous condition.

The a.c. is short of refrigerant(freon). I need to find out what kind a 1991 Honda civic LX uses.

r-12. Honda didn't start using r134a until 1994. There should be a sticker under the hood, usually on the core support, that specifies.
