Time to check the transmission fluid. Pull the transmission oil stick and see if the fluid is red or brown. In fact see if you have any fluid on the stick up or near the line. You may have to change the transmission fluid by putting the car on jack stands, putting an oil pan and newspapers under the transmission and removing the first the tranmission oil stick holder and draining the fluid. Next use a rachet and socket of remove the bolts to the transmission fluid oil pan and finish draining the fluid. Next remove and clean the gasket area on the bottom of the transmission and transmission fluid pan. Be sure to note if there is metal at the bottom of the fluid pan. If so you may need a transmission overhaul if not clean the bottom of the fluid pan. Next remove and replace the screen and O ring and tighten bolts.
Install a new gasket on the pan and install putting bolts on pan tightening a little bit at a time until torqued properly to specifications. Refill fluid down the stick holder until full. Now with the parking brake set and the car in park rev the engine at fast idle without racing it and shift through all the gears and back to park. Check fluid level and look for leaks. Good Luck

How easily dies the shifter move? if it feels as if there is no pressure, then possibly the cable is broken. have you had the fluid level checked? maybe there is a leak you are unaware of.

My nissan pulsar 1997 wont come out of park the shifter moves but the car wont change to from park to drive/reverse

Do you feel detent positions as you move the shifter? If it gives little resistance or lacks detents, your shift linkage has come undone (simple fix).
If you feel detent positions but the transmission does not engage, your transmission has failed. Check the fluid... you'll know.

Sounds like the cable broke at the transmission..While someone moves the shifter look under the hood where the transmission is and see if the linkage moves

Transmission will shift, but car won't move.

Hi, if it is an automatic transmission, it could be several things:
It could be really low on transmission fluid or the fluid may have leaked out. Do you see an reddish or reddish-brown fluid under the car? Check the fluid level by looking at the transmission fluid dipstick.
The torque converter (essentially a motion transfer device that resembles two fans facing each other) may be bad. As the engine spins, up, the fluid in the torque converter starts spinning and flowing and starts to 'spin' the blade on the transmissin side (it's called locking up the torqure converter). If there a malfunction in the converter, or no fluid, as noted above, no motion to the transmission.
Is the emergency brake stuck on?
Another issue might be the transmission linkage - when you move the shift handle to "D", there is a linkage that moves a lever on the transmission to change how fluid moves thru the transmission, etc. Check for a broken linkage between the bottom of the shift handle and the tranny. This is best done at a good auto repair shop or dealer.
If this is a manual transmission car, you probably have a worn out clutch plate or broken shift linkage. See a mechanic.

Trans in a 95 beretta wont move shut off moves then wont move shut off then moves

Your description isn't entirely clear, but it sounds like there may be a problem with the lockout solenoid on the shift handle, or possibly a stretched or seized shift cable. If the handle moves freely, but you are not able to move the car when it appears to be in neutral, the cable probably needs to be replaced. If the car drives for a short while but then loses power and has to be restarted, you may have a faulty torque converter or transmission computer. If the shift handle won't move sometimes, it may be due to a faulty lockout solenoid or brake pedal switch.
