The most common issues are overheating and noises in the radiator. If you suspect that the cap is bad just replace it as it is a cheap repair as car repairs go.

How can I tell if the water pump is working or not on my 2001 ford escape?

Start the truck and remove the radiator cap, make sure to take the pressure off the cap as you take it off if the truck or radiator is hot. It can burn pretty bad. Best thing to do if you are not familiar with how to do this is let the truck cool off and then remove the radiator cap and start the truck and let it warm up. As it is warming up you should see the antifreeze moving in the radiator. If not raise the RPM's just a little and you can see the antifreeze move. If it does and the engine is not heating up and no leaks are seen the pump is ok.

My car is runing like a sparkplug is missing but its not an radiator water not flowing

Hi Henry:
Sounds lke you've two problems that may (or maybe not) be related, so let's try to isolate them and see how it works out.
- First, let's deal with the spark. I'd suggest you remove the sparkplugs. Don't mix them up since you want to look at their condition so you'll know what is going on in each cylinder. By looking at the tip of the plug you can tell if it's firing normally, fouled with oil, Contaminated with carbon, or wet with gas. Replace any bad plugs (best to do them all) and then drive normally until the problem happens again. Then recheck the plugs and you'll have zeroed right in on the problem.
- Radiator - By "not flowing" do you mean that the water pump is not working? The only other thing that would cause the coolant not to flow wold be a stuck closed thermostat, and the engine would overheat if that were the case.
With the engine cold, remove the radiator cap. Fill to the top. Install cap tight. Run until engine is warm and look for leaks.
DO NOT REMOVE RADIATOR CAP or attempt to adjust any hose connections while engine is HOT.

How can you tell the water pump is bad?

You should be able to remove radiator cap and see the fluid circulating in the radiator, if there is no circulation then the pump is possibly bad.

My 1991 Chevy Cavalier has just turned 100, 500 miles and has started acting up, went to ck my antifreeze and when i took the radiator cap off ( car is started) the antifreeze in the car was just sitting...

It does not circulate until the engine is warm. At that point the thermostat(cooling valve) opens allowing the coolant , from the radiator ,to circulate into the engine. Before that point only the coolant already in the engine circulates, inside the engine alone. .

How to tell if water pump is bad 3800 gm

The 3800's also had other problems. And also Issues for those that are unaware.

Be aware that there are bleeder screws to bleed air out of the system when filling the coolant. With out properly bleeding the system the coolant can Vaporlock in the system causing overheating.

Also if it has been over heated you need to check for a blown head gasket. Smell the antifreeze, if it smells burnt you should be concerned. Next with the engine cold and the system properly bled, leave the radiator cap off and start the engine, if it bubbles constantly or bursts out of the open radiator cap, seek diagnosis at your local repair shop as they have the equipment to do so properly.

I also suggest using an Infrared Thermometer to check temperatures with. if the engine is at 230f and the upper hose is at 200f, and the lower hose is still cool you likely have a clogged radiator. If the upper hose is cool as well then you have a bad water pump or t-stat. if the upper hose slowly warms, and you start to get bubbles then it's likely a water pump with the fins eroded off by electrolysis (gotta change that coolant at regular intervals)

Also make sure the radiator fans turn on.

1 Answer ls400- keeps pushing radiator coolant out of overflow,

Your radiator could be glogged and causing it to back up out of overflow, drain coolant,if still good, save and remove bottom hose from radiator get hose and insert in radiator and let run and see how flow is,if clooged,go to autozone and tell them what is happening and they will get you what you need to unglog .To check water pump, unscrew radiator cap and put over opening, crank engine, let it get at operating temperature, remove cap and check flow.Click on link to view radiator flush.

My 98 olsd minivan 3.4 overheats in first 15 min

Air is possibly getting into the system and from what I can tell you should replace the radiator cap. The pressure valve may be bad. Road test the car after you replace the cap and top off the system.

Why is my car getting hot?

low coolant, bad radiator cap, bad water pump, clogged heater hoses, radiator full of sediment, bad coolant mixture, bad thermostat. Cracked head, blown head gasket. Without more information I can just tell you a number of reasons why this is happening.
