You need a special fan clutch wrench to remove it. Or try an air chisel just to break it free. Once you remove the fan and shroud you should be able to gain access and remove the pulley.

Water Pump leaks from the front end of the Wagon.

follow this steps and fix it. God bless you
  1. Determine the Reason for Water Pump Failure
    • 1 Repair a water pump by checking your car for a failure in the bearings. You can test for bearing failure by seeing if there is any play in the shaft that is connected to the electrical fan blades, as well as the drive pulley to the pump itself.
    • 2 If you notice any free play in the shaft or the pulley, you will need to take the pump apart and replace the bearings.

    • 3 Determine if the water pump failure is due to a leak in the casing. Examine the water pump housing for leaking or water stains in the drainage hole next to the pulley.
    • 4 If water is dripping from this hole, then the seals inside the pump need to replaced in order to repair the pump.
Remove the Water Pump for Repair
    • 5 Allow the engine to cool completely before removing any part of the cooling system. Never open a radiator cap or plug while the engine is still warm.
    • 6 Disconnect the car battery. This will prevent the electrical fan from turning on while you are under the hood.
    • 7 Drain the radiator of all fluid and disconnect the radiator hoses. Collect the fluid with a plastic container and keep it in a safe place until you are ready to put it back into the radiator.
    • 8 Remove the fan assembly. This will include the shroud, the fan and the fan belt. Disconnect the electrical leads for the fan.
    • 9 Remove the pulley for the fan belt as well in order to have access to the water pump.
    • 10 Use a socket set to remove the water pump from its engine mount.
    • 11 Open the housing for the water pump and replace the seals or bearing as necessary. Some auto parts stores carry repair kits that have both the seals and bearings for specific types of water pumps.
    • 12 Reassemble the cooling system by replacing the water pump, pulley, fan belt, fan assembly and radiator hoses. Refill the radiator with the fluid.
    • 13 Start the engine to see if the water pump repair was successful. Check for leaks before you take the car out on the road.

How do i change a water pump on 1996 grand cherokee limited V8

I'll assume you have a 4.0l

The 4.0L engine is equipped with a reverse rotation (counterclockwise) water pump. The word REVERSE is stamped or imprinted on the cover of the viscous fan drive and on the inner side of t he fan. The letter R is stamped onto the water pump impeller. When replacing water pump, ensure proper pump is installed. Installation of the wrong water pump will cause engine overheating.

NOTE:On models with 4.0 L engine, front grill must be removed to access radiator draincock. Draining cooling system can be accomplished by removing drain plug from side of block as well as by loosening radiator draincock. Drain plug is located on lower left side of engine block.

Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system. Disconnect electric cooling fan connector. Remove electric cooling fan and electric fan shroud assembly (if equipped).
Loosen, but do not remove, 4 water pump pulley-to-water pump hub bolts and 4 viscous fan-to-idler pulley nuts. Remove accessory drive belt. Remove 4 viscous fan to idler pulley nuts, and remove fan and shroud together.
Remove 4 water pump pulley bolts and remove pulley. Remove power steering pump and bracket. Disconnect heater hoses and lower radiator hose at water pump. Remove 4 water pump retaining bolts. Remove water pump.

to install just reverse procedures

Need to replaCE WATER PUMP 2002 GMC DURAMAX DIESEL how hard?

cardenderek,
This info is totally bogus. You obviousely have never changed a water pump on a 6.6 liter Duramax Diesel engine.1st off it isnt belt driven it is gear driven from the drive train inside the engine. You have to remove the fan shroud, clutch fan assem.,and harmonic balancer as one of the mounting bolts is behind the balancer. Also remove the left side inner fender for easier access.

I believe the bearing on my waterpump is bad. while driving the fan began rubbing the shroud and eventually wedged against the waterpump pulley. before removing the radiator, shroud and hoses i checked...

You can't remove the fan and pump together. The pulley will be i nthe way. You must remove the fan and clutch, then the pulley then you will have access to the water pump bolts as well as the other components which must be removed to get the pump off.

How to replace 2001 northstar v8 water pump pully

I am assuming you are talking about the pulley on the water pump itself, in which case you have to replace the water pump.

First of all,you need the removal tool which looks like this.

http://www.etoolcart.com/gmnorthstarwaterpumpsocketast7880.aspx

You need to remove the air filter housing and ducting to gain easy access to the pump.

Remove the shield covering the pulley and belt. The belt is easily removed by levering the tensioner pulley.

The water pump is located at the lower radiator hose manifold where you will also find the thermostat.Remove the manifold cover and you will see the water pump.

Insert the removal tool over the pump making sure it is locked in position. You will need to use a breaker bar on the removal tool and turn the tool CLOCKWISE to release the pump (1/4 turn), or if you imagine the breaker bar being vertical, push towards the windscreen of your car,it takes quite a bit of force to unseat the pump hence the use of a breaker bar.

Installing the new pump does not require as much torque as removing the old one.Tighten the new pump to 73 ft.lbs. making sure it is seated properly before tightening.

Don't forget to clean out the water pump housing prior to installing the new pump and don't forget to include a new water pump gasket and housing cover gasket.

It is also a good idea to install a new thermostat while you're at it.
