ENGINE MISFIRES WHEN SERVICE LIGHT FLASHES

Hi:
engine misfires are one of the few engine codes that will flash the engine service light. Usually misfires are caused by a failing ignition module, but you can have your vehicle's codes scanned for free at an auto parts store to find out what caused the code. If multiple misfires on all cylinders are detected, it pretty much eliminates a single bad spark plug or wire, but something that effects the entire ignition system, such as a module or pick up. Hope you figure this out!

Service engine soon light is flashing

When the light comes on without flashing, it just means an emissions problem, when it starts to flash it has become more serious. I suspect that there was an error putting the plugs and or wires. That computer can determine if there is a misfire and it will put out a P040X, code where X represents which cylinder is the problem. This will help you not have to take each one apart. If there are more than one, check each number.

Ex. P0401 means there is misfire on cylinder number 1

P0400 is a random misfire detected.

If you take it to an Advance or Autozone they will usually scan if for free.

By the way, if you used cheap plugs instead of platinum plugs that could do it too.

Hope this helps.

I somewhat agree with other solutions on this page. I agree that what you are describing is a severe misfire, however there are MANY possible causes for a severe misfire other than just the spark plugs...I recommend diagnosing the CAUSE of the misfire before spending any money "GUESSING" and replacing a bunch of parts.

Also, a code P0300 is a "RANDOM MISFIRE" code which indicates that there is definately more than one cylinder misfiring. Your computer MAY display this code, however, a SINGLE cylinder misfire can also cause a loss of power and the check engine light to flash.
You may just have something like a bad coil on one cylinder that needs to be replaced. This is why PROPER diagnosis is recommended.
