I have a 97 honda dx and just had it maintenance and the check engine light just came on what does that mean

What sort of shop do you go to that gives
you a car back with a check light on ?

Surely you know it indicated a possible
system failure & requires a trip back to the shop
to check for codes & continue the diagnose. That
sounds like it was needed instead of some maintenance
proceedure

HOW DO I RESET THE 'MAINTENANCE NEEDED' LIGHT?

SERVICE INTERVAL REMINDER
If equipped with a service reminder flag, the oil and oil filter service interval reminder flags will activate after every 7500 miles of operation. To reset indicators, insert ignition key into slots below indicator flags at lower right corner of instrument cluster. Push key in until reminder window changes from Red to Green.

When the maintenance required window changes from green to red what does it mean?

It's due for maintence, like timing belt, if not done, check or replace all filter's, check exhaust system, check brakes and tire's, steering, belts, transmission fluid, needs to be taken in for a check up.

My Maintenance light is on my Honda 2004 CRV, I have 53000 miles and have not replaced my batttery, why would the maintenance light come on and not go off?

it means a number of things, either there is a problem with the mechanical or electrical side of the car, or that it is time for a service,
the only why to tell why the light is on is to have it connected to a diagnostics machine at the local garage.
