Question about 1997 Mitsubishi Galant

1 Answer

I have a 1997 Mitsubishi Galant ES that failed smog. I am told by a mechanic it might just be an ERB or ERG valve that needs cleaning, but he is not sure if this car has this valve. What is it and does my car have this valve?

My 97 lexus failed the smog check my mechanic say is the pvs, what I have to fix

Why didn't you ask your mechanic what this was? I never heard of a PVS. I have heard of a PVC valve, but that is not likely to fail your smog test. Does the car have any trouble codes?

check your plug, wire, and especially the boots, if theyre cracked they can cause your spark to arc and create your misfire in that cylinder. You may need simply a tune up for that matter.

I am having the same issue on Mitsubishi Galant 02. Clattering on acceleration, herky jerky idle. Pulled a code multiple cylinder misfire. My mechanic's diagnosis is bad valve cover gasket causing oil to seap into the spark plugs and bad timing belt, which I have not replaced at 150k miles. I do however know my fuel injectors do need cleaning, he hasn't ruled that out either. Have you pulled any code on it? I have read on engine knock sensor going out on some of these also. Hope this helps some.

Idling problems may be cause buy a number of issues.  You may check out the fast idle control valve and PCV if they would need cleaning.  You can check out the timing it may be advanced, that is why you feel that the car runs hard.

Valve Lifters

This car has hydraulic self-adjusting lifters - there is no mechanical adjustment. Go to the local parts store and get a can of Seafoam - pour half the can in the oil, drive 30-40 miles, and change the oil and filter. It's possible that oil sludge is preventing a lifter from pumping up. Seafoam is good at clearing that stuff out.
