I had the same problem except mine was stuck in park, my dad said that in order for it to release into reverse or drive it has to make a connection to the brake lights. and i didnt have any brake lights at all so we took out this gray box like maybe 2x4" and the contact was dirty inside, cleaned it and put it back in and then i had brake lights and i was able to shift into gear. but i went ahead and bought a new one from lincoln and it was 65 dollars. its worth it! lincoln told us when this first happened that the gear shifter needed to be replaced, it really doesnt they just want you to spend the extra couple hundred

The first thing you do is check the brake lights, do they work, if not you found your problem.

Dont have key need to get it into neutral

Set the parking brake - so it doesn't roll away!
In the owner's manual it should show how to bypass the transmission interlock system. If no manual, there is likely a small access hole - possibly w/a cover - near the transmission shift lever. Insert a flat head screwdriver (you set the parking brake yet?) and it'll release the shift lever to move it to Neutral.

Colum shift lever is locked in park

I think you must depress the brake to release the shift interlock. If this is true, the interlock switch on the brake pedal may have become dislodged or failed. You could try bypassing it to test.

Shift lever will not move out of park. Engine is running, seat belt fastened, parking brake released, all doors hood and trunk closed, foot firmly on brake pedal. When the button on the side of the shifter...

you should hear a click from the solenoid when you apply the brakes. If your brake lights don't work, your shift lock release won't either. There is a bypass method for emergencies in your owner manual. Check fuse for brake lights. And switch on brake pedal

My 2003 ZX2 wont release with the button on the shift lever. The brake lights work, and I can bypass by using a screw driver in the hole on the console .

check fuses, remove console and check for power at solenoid when you apply brake pedal, if power is present and solenoid doesnt release lever then solenoid is likely Failed, if you dont have any power at solenoid with pedal pressed then you likely have a blown fuse or bad wire in solenoid power circuit. Also verify the solenoid has good ground circuit.

Can't shift car out of park

There is a shift lock release lever located just to the left of the gear shift. Pop off the plastic cover, and then use a flathead screwdriver or similar instrument to push down and release the lever. While you are holding that down, you will be able to override the lock and shift out of park. Then release the lever.

The fuel door in my car would not open had to pop it open how do i fix it so the button will work again

usually they are opened via cable. you'll have to trace the cable and replace it, if it's broke. Sometimes you just need to lubricate the lever where you activate the door.

Shift lock parking break

ck if your brake lights are working, if not, ck the fuse. if fuse is good and brake lights work, could be problem with solenoid not unlocking the lever, there should be a bypass so you can get it into gear (small slot near shifer, put your key in there to release shifter)

1st and 2nd shift error on code reader in trans

Shift error codes are enabled not only if the solonoids are faulty, does your scanner show you the solonoids switching? you could have a wiring fault. It could also be the pcm not allowing the solonoids to activate. These complicated systems are very difficult to diagnose for us profesionals with all the scanners and machines we have. Find a transmission shop in your area with a system to drive the vehicle bypassing the computor system, this will determine electrical or internal trans failure. But before you do anything check your conections from the transmission to the pcm. Also all the engine conectors and earth straps.
