Question about 2000 Pontiac Sunfire

1 Answer

Pontiac sunfire 2000 stock radio keeps cutting out. Goes off and on for long periods of time. I checked the output leads from the radio to the speakers (8 leads for 4 speakers) and they all check out at 4 ohms each. The radio cuts out even at rest. It seems to happen soon after it is turned on.I checked the ground and there is about 40 ohms between the radio chassis and the lighter negative (grounded). It is not the radio because I dropped another Radio in and it does the same thing. Help!

How do I fix the clock display on my 1999 Pontiac Sunfire?

It appears to be that the radio clock display has malfunctioned, and is due for a replacement radio, which could be an aftermarket or oem radio, maybe found at a junk yard.

Tools required for oem replacement radio, torx keys set.

Before working on the radio or other electronics, disconnect the battery cables with 8mm wrench.

Replacing the oem radio is much easier, if you obtain oem radio, compared to aftermarket radio, due to being direct fit.

The radio is same for 1995 to 1999 Pontiac Sunfire and the Chevy Cavalier, regardless of sub models, such as SE,GT, VL,VLX,Z24. etc.

Parts needed for the the aftermarket radio install :Stereo assembly, stereo wiring harness adapter, radio antenna adapter, and dash install kit.wiring diagram for the wire colors / functions, along with tools, such as torx key set, screwdrivers, wire crimper, wire stripper, double ended wiring connectors, hair dryer.

The oem stereo removal video is for the 2000 to 2005 Sunfire / Cavalier, but are the same or very similar procedures.

I have a 2000 pontiac sunfire an the radio seems to stay on even when the car us turned completely off. What does that mean because it keeps killing my battery.?!

The most likely answer is that your vehicle's door pin switches aren't working. When you open the driver's door, does your dome light turn on? Your radio works with the vehicle's data bus to stay on until the door is opened; if the system can't tell that the door has been opened, then it won't turn off. The door pin switch should be mounted at the front of the door opening.

unfortunately if you don't have the code only a dealership can call the radio manufacturer and get it for you. I work at a dealer, and have to do it all the time it sucks, I'm sorry..

You might want to test your alternator and check your power connections to make sure they are tight and don't have corrosion.
