Question about 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan

Used my van Friday morning and afternoon, but that same evening it would only crank and not get a spark. Checked the fuel pump (running), checked the fuses (all good) no interior lights no odometer reading when the door opens. Is there another fuse somewhere? Anything else I can check?

The problem is also no odometer and the interior lights don't come on when the door is open. Are there other fuses besides the ones under the hood?

  • honeypapaw Oct 07, 2009

I used my car one day in the morning and afternoon but in the evening all it would do would turn over but would not start. I had a tech check the fuel pump and the fuses and all was good. Also, the odometer or the interior lights does not light when the door opens. I don't have an alarm on the car (that I am aware of) so I may have another fuse somewhere other than under the hood. I cannot take my car to AutoZone as it won't move. what else can I tell my tech to check?

The fuse box is under the hood and all the fuses were checked and found to be good. Is there another area where I can find fuses?

There are fuses for these in the interior fuse box and in the second fuse/relay box in the engine compartment. This symptom sounds like a safety feature indicating a problem was detected but with no spark could be a coil pack problem as well. If you find no blown fuses you will need to take it to a dealer to find the problem. They have diagnostic equipment and can narrow down the search.

Please see that all the fuses in the fuse box beneath the steering in the driver front panel is okay.

It is a fuse issue.

Good luck dear.

Hi,

At least you know that the starter is working. If the starter cranks but the engine won't start, there could be wide range of problems. Here are some of the most common:
- Problems with fuel delivery system (e.g bad fuel pump, fuel pump relay, clogged fuel screen, etc.)
- Problem with engine electronics (e.g crank sensor, cam sensor, air flow sensor, power relay, engine computer, etc.)
- Ignition system problems, especially on older vehicles with the distributor (e.g bad ignition coil, commutator, rotor, distributor cap, etc.)
- Defective ignition switch
- Problems with vehicle security system
- Internal engine problems (e.g broken timing belt or gear, low compression, etc.)

Let me know, if need further assistance.

Note - It's always better to scan the car for Error Codes. That always help you to narrow the fix.

Hope i helped you.

    Thanks for your response!!

Better to Scan your Car for Codes . You can take you car to Autozone and scan it for Codes. But, i have seen in many cases, all the symptoms you are referring would indicate Faulty Alarm as well. I have seen a couple of cases ( Though on different vehicle ) that Due to the alarm, they do not see any dashboard light, car crank and won't start.

Note - Make sure battery is Fine and in working condition.

There are so many reasons for the same, so i would advise you to get it scanned to get Codes or seek a local tech to properly investigate the issue.I cannot jump on the conclusion that it would be Fuse or it would be alternator or Fuel Pump.

Let me know, if need further assistance.

    Hope i helped you.

I have a 1993 Plymouth voyager van (3.0v6 3-speed auto) with 185K. Engine cranks but no start. Fuel pump is not energizing at the run position on the ignition. 12 volts showing at the blue wire along...

have the vehicle scanned while cranking to see if there is a crank position sensor signal (CKP). this tells the ECM that the engine is turning and timing for the spark plugs. If the Brain box doesn't know this then the ASD circuit is tripped and stops fuel and spark. relatives with a dynasty had a crank sensor wire severed from running over something and didn't mention it.

Cranks but wont start

Check out the ignition coil for weak or no spark.

98 ford windstar van ran out of gas and now wont start even after refueling.

To review - - the fuel pump in the tank pumps fuel to the injectors.
There is a fuel shut-off which works in a wreck to prevent a fire.
If the plunger is down, the switch is on. Normal.

It is possible the fuel lines are full of air which would take a long time to purge by cranking the engine. Sometimes you have to use starting fluid or other means to "run" the engine long enough to get gas back into the injectors.
As long as the engine cranks, the battery is fine.
It is also possible the pump was damaged when the tank was run empty. The pump uses liquid fuel to cool and lubricate the electric pump. It can overheat when running the tank below 1/4 full.
It is also possible the fuel filter was clogged with junk from the bottom of the tank.
I would get someone to check for fuel pressure at the injectors and try some carb cleaner or starting fluid in the intake hose next.

My 2002 chevy 1500 van , 4.3 liter v6, will not fire. ran great, no signs of trouble leding up to now. Cranks, cranks, & cranks but no sputter, fire, anything

I would check and be sure I had fire to the plugs and fuel to the throttle body. I read what you wrote about the fuel pump but then on the end of the description where you put gas in the van the pump might not be working. If so you could have a bad wire to the fuel pump or a plugged fuel filter. Once you verify those items I would pull the 02 sensor ahead of the catalytic converter in the exhaust and make sure the cat or muffler is not plugged. If they are it will put back pressure on the engine and not allow fuel into the cyl. to fire.

The engine turns over but the motor will not start. The van was running fine when it was cut off. It doesn't seem to be getting gas.

It's very likely your fuel pump has failed. Have somebody thump on the fuel tank while you're cranking the engine and see if it starts. If it does, replace the fuel pump. Otherwise get your fuel pressure checked, and check for spark. If no spark, check to make sure the distributor is turning(if applicable) If a 3.3 motor with no spark, suspect the crank sensor or cam sensor. Crank sensor is much easier to replace if experimenting.

MY 1997 CHEVY S10 WONT START IN THE MORNING WHEN ITS COOL OUT BUT IT FIRES RIGHT UP IN THE AFTERNOON- IT CRANKS OVER VERY STRONG BUT IT WONT START- IF I MANUALY PUT GAS IN IT WILL TRY AND THEN NOTHING- I...

Go back to basics---3 things needed to make an engine run---fire/spark---gas/fuel----air---remove anyone of these and the engine will not run---have you checked for spark when cold----you've tried fuel from what you've said---is there any type of damper that opens and closes when cold---possibly operating a switch/sensor when closed/cold in conjunction with something else---another idea is possible that when cold something (electrical connection attached to metal housing) is contracting loosing contact---corrosion issues with connections---this all has to do with spark that may change with temperature---find out what you don't have (spark-fuel-air) and go from there GL

My 1991 grand marquis wont crank, it was running great on friday then sat morning it just spending i smell gas when im trying to crank it. i was thinking it as jump time

It may have jumped time. However, if you smell gasoline, it got flooded. Here is the lay of the land.
If it cranks, as in turning over but not starting. And you smell gasoline. The fuel is good, but there is not electrical spark going to the plugs. Bad coil. Cracked distributor cap. Moisture under the cap. Check this before you worry about the timing. You first have to test for ignition. Also don't pump the gas when starting it. See what happens. Also when the car is warm, never pump the gas. Also check the wire going from the distributor cap to the coil.
Good luck,
Hope this helps,
Best,
Mark

1999 chevy astro van 4.3 will not start in morning, after cranking for several minutes it will finally turn over and run fine the rest of the day could it be a bad fuel pump or oil pump

I have the same problem, I replaced the fuel pump. Did NOT solve it. i was told that it is a computer problem. The computer is not sending electric to the fuel pump, by cranking it several times the oil pressure builds up and will over ride the computer and send power to the fuel pump. This is a common problem on these asrto vans.
