Question about 1999 Pontiac Grand Am GT

2 Answers

My car has a loud whinning noise especially when you give it gas. We replaced the power steering pump as suggested but that did not take care of the noise. I was told it may be the "rack and pinion" (not sure how spelled), can you possibly give me a solution to this? Thank you, Mary.. My car is a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am.

"rack and pinion"  is the system of steering installed on your car. A constant noise that accentuates at full gas means a bearing inside the motor or its accessories (pumps, pulleys, alternator) is at fault. It  never happens in a steering unit. If you paid for that you've been fleeced.
Try listening to your engine  with the gearbox at Park and post again or take it to an honest mechanic.

Have very loud whinning noise on2000 saturn sc1.9 sohc can intake gasket cause this sound or a tensioner

Tensioner, alternator, power steering pump, water pump. All of these can cause this. Using either a mechanics stethoscope or a long screw drive (place you screwdriver near not on the pulley if each decice. Then place you ear to the handle..the screwdriver will transmit any sounds to your ear. Always be careful of clothing, jewelery hair etc so I'd doesn't get caught in the belts or pulleys) locate what is making the noise and replace.

Whinning noise when engine is off

Whinning Causes
The whining noise you hear coming from the power steering pump is one of three things. The first is more of a loud "hush" than a whine; this is the sound of fluid rushing through the bypass valve when you turn the wheel all the way to one side or the other. Sometimes the bypass valve malfunctions or doesn't open all the way, causing pressure to back up in the pump and cause your engine rpm to drop. The second and third causes result from cavitation -- vacuum pockets created behind the rotor's vane blades as a result of extremely high pump action -- or air in the lines.

New power steering pump put in, lines bleed, and still having whinning noise. Is there another part with the power steering pump we can check?

are you sure the noise is comming from pump and not the belt tension pulley right next to it ?

I use a wiffle ball bat with both end caps cut off (hollow tube) held to my ear to help localize noises on running engines I have even found tricky intake vac leaks with that trick

My 03 Denali makes a loud whinning noise when I accelerate mechanic says needs to replace brake hydroboost

It could be any thing from the alternator to the Power steering pump. The power steering pump feeds the hydro boost unit. It is unlikely the hydroboost is causing the noise. I recomend you take it to the dealer and have them perform the proper diagnostics as they will have the proper pressure gauges and equipment needed to perform the tests.

I hope this helps.

I have a 95 nissan altima and i wanted to know how do i know if my power steering pump is going out when i start the car it makes a loud whinning noise

If the pump is low or empty, the most likely cause would be the high pressure hose is leaking and needs to be replaced. If the power steering reservoir is full and the pump is still making noise then it could be the pump or a restriction in the rack valve body.
